had a lively discussion Explanation: I think it can be translated in many different ways, and I am sure you can come up with something better than mine. But what it means is that they talked about it a lot, and they enjoyed doing so. ”(They) had a good time discussing it" is anonther way to say it. It is often used with "hanasi ni": 話に花を咲かせる |

have a lively discussion (or talk) about Explanation: ”(話に)花を咲かせる" means to talk or discuss about something, and can be used for various subjects like "老子論" this time, or "思い出話" (talking about the good old days) for example. There may be better expression for this, but I am sure that they actually talk about 老子論. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 32 mins (2007-08-31 01:19:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Oh, Yuki-san already posted her answer while I was writing my answer. I agree with her. |
