see explanation Explanation: "Nevertheless, what makes this the true site of ethics is its being the site of a gradually unfolding encounter with the other" 'The other' is an overused philosophical term denoting anything we find foreign, alien, challenging, discomforting. I think he is saying that ethical development comes from these sorts of encounter and how we deal with them, but I'm not entirely sure how this ties up with the first sentence. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2007-11-22 15:33:30 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I wrote: "Nevertheless, what makes this the true site of ethics is its being the site of a gradually unfolding encounter with the other" Slightly inaccurate methinks. 他者との出会いの場 should be '...site of encounter with the other' but I guess ようやく開かれたmodifies 場. But the timescale of this isn't clear to me. Do you think the context here is the ethical development of the individual, or the history of religion/morality? -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 hrs (2007-11-22 15:52:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- [but I guess ようやく開かれたmodifies 場] and would mean finally opened rather than 'gradually unfolding'. Having said that, it probably modifies 他者 自我は、開かれた他者との交感の中にあって、はじめて自我として確立されていくのでしょう。 > > 一例?ですが… ... www.eigaseikatu.com/imp/2855/269837/ Hell, this is tough without seeing the whole thing! |
