Japanese term or phrase:
The entire quote from Saigou Takamori is:
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to translate the last sentence. Thank you.

Honesty is the best policy.
Explanation:
What Saigo is saying, according to your quote and your title question, is "We tend to devise some trick and thus muanipulate the situation. Then pretend that the problem does not exist." Then goes on, "Only to be bothered by your own manipulative mind (or dishonesty)".
I would like to twist this into the common cliche I cited in the Terget term. It would be easier to understand.
How does that sound to you?
