I understand the words in the sentence, but need some help parsing it. The structure is quite difficult to follow. Thanks in advance.
Here's the whole sentence.
近年新たなコミュニケーションツールとして注目される携帯emailに着目した、本投稿論文が行ったemailコミュニケーションにおける性差に関して考察する試みは評価できる。

English translation:our attempt to study the gender differences in e-mail communication which we present in this paper,
Explanation:
You can, of course, correct and polish my English, but this is what the text is saying:

There is some merit in our attempt to study the gender differences in e-mail communication which we present in this paper, focusing our attention on mobile e-mail communication which is gathering popularity as a new communication tool in recent years.

Hyouka dekiru means "we can give it a positive evaluation," or "there is some merit."
I put "our attemp" for "kokoromi" to show what this Japanese word may be translated to, but I think you can omit it. It sounds too modest in English.

I should have mentioned what 本 refers to. This should be obvious to Kris, who has the whole document, but you can't tell from this sentense alone. It is very common that the authors themselves refer to their paper as 本投稿論文, so my sample translation followed this. In this case, 評価できる is a modest way to say, "our paper is great." This is just a style to write an academic paper as if you were a third party.

But there is also a possibility that somelese is reviewing this paper. In this case, of course, it's THIS paper, etc.

I am sorry Kurt. I was just thinking about a guy named Kris!

Explanation:
As I see it, this article on the gender difference in the use of e-mail communication pays special attention on the e-mail traffic on the mobile phones (mode of communication which has become more popular these days).

agree  Yasu Hosomatsu: I agree. But, 本投稿論文is NOT "our" piece but somebody else's piece. So, "There is some merit in this attempt...which this study presents..., their attention... " would be more accurate, I think.
