"Mental faculties" stands for 「心の働き」, so in this case I would go for "mental churning", but it depends on the context, which I don't know entirely.

Although I provided "mental faculties" as a possible translation, I don't think that neither it, nor "working" (which is　働き) are proper enough. More context would be helpful, indeed.
I guess 心の動き refers much more to the "movements" of the mind, considering the Eastern notion of the anxious mind, which "jumps around like a monkey" and tends to attach to different things. In this sense, I understand 心の動き as the opposite of calmness and concentration (a time when no "movements" are observed), for which reason I provided "mental churning".
