Latin term or phrase: Unam altero tuebor
This motto appears as part of a Coat of Arms on a leaded light panel/window in my possession, and I wish to know the english meaning to assist me in tracing the family to whom the Arms were awarded

I defend one by the other.

Explanation:
This is the literal translation. 'Vnam' being feminine, the words most likely to be understood with it are 'familiam', 'family' or 'gentem', 'clan, extended family'. 'Alter' means 'other' in the sense of 'THE other', i.e., one of two, as opposed to 'alius', 'other', i.e., 'ANY other.' The word to be understood with 'altero' (ablative of means or instrument) must be for an inanimate thing, else it would require the preposition 'ab' (ablative of personal agent). My best guess as to what this would be is 'insigne', 'coat of arms'. The general meaning would thus be that there was an alliance between two families or clans and each rendered mutual aid to the other in time of need.

Ms. Benvenuto is correct. The tense of the verb is future (indicative active, first person sngular).
