disagree  diana bb: Outer bailey is a courtyard within the external wall or between two outer walls of a castle. 'Papilys', meanwhile, is not a courtyard, but a settlement.

fortified (foot) settlement

Explanation:
Priešpilis (outer ward, outer bailey, also fore work) is a courtyard or the space between the inner curtain wall and the outer curtain wall of a castle.
Papilys is a settlement outside the castle (or a hillfort), fortified by a defensive wall, moat, or a rampart.

Thus, 'priešpilis' is IN the castle and 'papilys' is OUTSIDE the castle.

neutral  LilianNekipelov: It depends on the context, and what the particular location looks like. Not always. It does not have to be a settlement -- it is just the space -- outside the castle -- still fortified. It was usually settled.
