No, of course, I recognise that my answer does not quite cut it. But in any case the word "teisė" would not get translated. "Patikėjimo teisė" is "trust", just like "nuosavybės teisė" is "ownership". The "teisė" part theoretically refers to the fact that the ownership or trust is being held legally and has the right to exist - doesn't make much sense in English, or is superfluous at best. To give Olga an exact translation, we would need to say, in one phrase, "trust" and something to qualify it that that the state and/or local government are the trustees (but without mentioning the settlor or the object of trust). Nothing sprang to mind on the go...

I take your point, "Guy" (☺), and thanks for the background. But breaking it down simply, Olga is asking about a certain „xyz teisę“, so I would imagine that the answer she needs is "xyz right" (or "the right to xyz"), whereas you are offering the phrase "public land held in trust". It would be really helpful to have more context, at least the sentence that she has to translate.

Gintautas, it is indeed not "law", and approximate to "right". But usually you would not translate the "teisė" part at all. The most common category of land ownership, the equivalent of UK's "fee simple" is "priklauso nuosavybės teise". It is the same type of "teisė" that this term involves. "Valstybės ir savyvaldybių žemės patikėjimo teisė" is a common real estate term in LT as this is another very common category of land ownership. The "patikejimas" ("trust") theoretically goes from the state to (by default) the National Land Service, or by derivation, from the latter to other government bodies. In English, you would say that public land is held in trust (of the public) by the state/government. So, at a very theoretical level, these are not exactly equivalent concepts (the former emphasises the trust of the state in authorities, while the latter is about the trust of the public in the state). However, for all practical intents and purposes, this is exactly the same thing - public land held in trust.

Olga, ką jūs verčiate? Ar kalbama apie padėtį Lietuvoje ar U.K.? Ką sako apie tą „teisę“? Tai galbūt šiou atveju ne "Law", o gal "right". Kaip parašyta ( valstybės ir savivaldybių žemės patikėjimo teisė) skamba, kad kalbama apie valstybės ir savivaldybių teisę patikėti žemę ... kažkam: (the) right of the national or local governments to entrust land
