I have one last great favor to ask. From family correspondence, this passage has me baffled: "fikk han skjote pa° en eiendom....Jacob ble konfirmert 6 august (year), og fikk da karakter 'Meget god Sogeskab. Flid og Forhold.' Han kan vaere fodt enten pa° (place), eller pa° (place). Han er dopt pa° (place), (person), (person), ...."

"Meget godt" is traditionally the second-highest grade, where the highest is "særdeles godt". It seems here to refer to the result of the course of instruction preparing for confirmation. This previously played a much more important role in Norwegian society than it does today, and failure to pass this examination (and thus to be confirmed) would seriously affect a young person's prospects. Confirmation instruction was largely responsible for the relatively high standards of literacy in the Norwegian population.

I still do not truly understand what is being expressed in this passage, especially since I think that it has to do with a farm. agree  George Runde: I agree, and think that you need to translate the meaning of the grade rather than the word itself. I don't know the context of this job, but you should put it in perspective of the location of the audience.

  -> I think the asker needs to know what this term means in the context. As you say, it is obviously not very helpful merely to translate it as "very good".
