ordfører Mayor, Chairman of Municipal Council Explanation: The "ordfører" is the Chairman of the Municipal Council. There is no official standard translation for this, but it is usually translated "Mayor". The title "Reeve" is not used. Some municipalities, notably Oslo, have parliamentary structures with a city government. Here each municipal department is headed by a political leader, known as a "byråd". The whole city government is headed by a "byrådsleder". In such cases, the municipality also has an "ordfører" who chairs the sessions of the "kommunestyre"/"bystyre" (the municipal council or "parliament"). Most Norwegian municialities have their own websites, and many of them provide information in English. The website of Stavanger, for exampe, is http://www.stavanger.kommune.no/svgmain.nsf/svghovedside. The Mayor of Stavanger is Mr. Leif Johan Sevland, who has been the mayor there for nearly ten years. |
