Norwegian term or phrase: skjebnefellesskap
I could use a little help to find a good word/words for this word in an academic document outlining religious political history in the sixteenth century:

"Stikk i strid med Melanchthons ønske om en riksreformasjon, var lutheranerne og zwinglianerne på veg inn i et skjebnefellesskap."

Explanation:
I agree with Per, there are many ways to say the same thing. This would probably be my choice.

Thanks to you all for your respsonses. I think Diarmuid's suggestion is the one that fits best for my purposes. It is very similar to Per's suggestion, and simply fits the genre better: as Per states, there could be any ways to combine the two concepts. Thanks again.

Surely there must be several ways of putting this, and I am not sure which would suit you better. Commonality of fates? Unity of destinies?
