hypermarket Explanation: What OBS and Rema as well as Smart Club have in common is that they have a selection far beyond normal household stores. Besides fresh and packaged food (own brands and name brands), dairy, grocery, bakery, cleaning supplies et al, these places will sell clothing, shoes, sportswear, lawnmowers, whitewater kayaks, kitchen supplies, paint, wallpaper, household electrics and electronics, building supplies, tiles and bathroom fixtures, navigators, cameras ... Smart Club was even selling pricey pre-owned German cars for a while, and they will sell you complete fitted kitchens. Hence the term hypermarket.... Example sentence(s):

large-scale retailing Explanation: In my opinion, this term describes the concept of "storhandel" whereas "hypermarket", "warehouse store", etc. are terms for those types of stores. Wikipedia says this about "hypermarket" for instance: "In commerce, a hypermarket or multi-department store is a superstore which combines a supermarket and a department store. The result is a very large retail facility which carries an enormous range of products under one roof, including full lines of groceries and general merchandise." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermarket |
