slang/nickname for cobblestones (Norw.brostein) used for paving of streets in the old days. Some streets are cobblestoned today as well, though, especially in older parts of town.

Personlig kjenner jeg ikke til noen tilsvarende slanguttrykk for "cobblestones" på engelsk, men utfra et søk på Google, ser det ut som om "cobbles" et det uttrykket man bruker innen bransjen - skjønt dette er mer et bransje- eller faguttrykk enn et slanguttrykk, og er rett og slett en forkortelse av "cobble stones", som har med tiden blitt sammensatt til "cobblestones".
