In Gehegehaltung sind am häufigsten Damhirsche (Damwild) anzutreffen; seltener auch Rotwild (Rothirsche). Aufgrund der naturnahen ganzjährigen Freilandhaltung behalten die Hirsche im Gegensatz zu Rindern, Schweinen und Geflügel den Charakter eines Wildtiers.
