The panels referred to here are part of an art work about the domestic environment. The whole phrase (in fact the entire piece!) is pretty demanding, but I think I'm gradually making sense of it. I'm really unsure, though, as what this particular bit really means and can't get beyond a literal interpretation.

English translation:the process of distancing is projected
Explanation:
Not very high confidence level because I'm not sure about this since the Portuguese uses a noun rather than a verb. But it only really makes sense to me to turn it into a verb in English, since it is a process that we are talking about.

- "a refuge into which the process of distancing OR the distancing process is projected".

Anyway, it might help your ideas...

the distance process is projected

Explanation:
Yes, you are right; the text is very dense and full of the artsy presumption commonly found in description of works of art, as if the author were competing with the artist for attention. Sure, parts of the text are balderdash, but I understand that you need to translate it. Here is my attempt at reproducing the relevant sentence original, including its nonsensical parts, as far as possible:

The panels are a record, a testimony of intention, which follow reactive contractions and surmised as a refuge in which the distance process is projected; not only the emotions but the very act of representing them

My apologies :-(

Notes to answerer
Asker: thanks - it's the idea of the distance process being projected that troubles me! I can't for the life of me work out what is being said here, and I'm pretty used to both this dense kind of text and art criticism. I feel the need to paraphrase in some sense here, but really don't know how to. By the way, your 'very act of representing them' is great, an improvement on my translation!

reminisces a process of the past or distancing

Explanation:
This is my figurative take on "se projecta o processo da distância", earlier on in the passage the panels are refered to as a record of something former, which presently is perceived as "a house" or "shelter".
