People learn how to do this through CBT therapy, which is often practiced by individuals who have PhD's in Education.

Self-learning / Self-study / Self-paced learning

Explanation:
Self study - this might be a more general term but it refers to any learning that someone undertakes without the help of a teacher or tutor.

Self-paced learning - this focuses more on students setting their own pace for modules, courses etc.

Self-learning - this tends to be for a context outside of formal education (autodidacticism/being self-taught).

It depends on the context but I would definitely avoid formation in English for this idea.

self-formation

Explanation:
I would use FORMATION if the term came from the idea of cultivation and cultural formation in the sense of German Bildung

The English or French `formation' is close to it, but still not correct. At the same time, it is not fully feasible to translate `Erziehung' by `education'. Behind the problem of correct translation stands the fact that German educational theory emphasizes a specific phenomenon in the educational process, i.e. `Bildung'.

A conotação nasce morto? Recomendo ao Mark estudar concordância nominal. O português nativo dele está para inglês ver.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
disagree  Mark Robertson: Formation does not connote education or training in English. Bildung não tem qualquer impacto no sentido de formation, e, na ausência de alguma prova em sentido contrário, a sua suposta conotação "nasce" morto.
8 hrs
-> há a conotação SIM quando o sentido nasce do termo BILDUNG em alemão.
