to be waited on.[verb] versus to be seen

Explanation:
the noun for shops etc. is service or customer service
and the verb is to be waited on....or to be helped
Example:
I was in that store for one hour and could get no one to wait on me. [in Portuguese, that would be atender, atendimento].

In a consultório...dentist or doctor...
it's to be seen, My appointment was at 10:00 but the dentist didn't see me until 12:00. [não me atendeu]The word service would not be used here...And there is no noun for this in a medical situation. In some cases, you MIGHT say..treatment....Example: They didn't treat me in the emergency room until five hours after I got there.

In Portuguese atender and atendimento works in many context. That's really great. In English, except for certain STORES or online things, the word service is NOT universally used.

So, there is no general context in English for the Portuguese atendimento. It depends on the context.

cheers

Summary: attendimento is customer service in stores or business. BUT not always.

If you say: O atendimento naquela loja é pessima....THAT would not be service in English. It would be: They don\'t know how to wait on people in that store. OR They are terrible with customers. BUT if you go to their customer service department, you can find someone to help you. Nesse caso customer service é um serviço dentro da loja mas não tem a ver com atendimento em si. E quando por exemplo você compra alguma coisa, e o produto não presta e vocês quer reclamar o quer que devolvam o seu dinheiro.

agree  Daniel Marcus: Hmmm US v UK issues here, I guess. Over here shop staff don't wait on customers, they serve them. What they do is called (customer) service, which is something I find myself talking about a lot, because customer service in Britain is often abysmal!

Specially if \'atendimento\' here is part of the other question \"atendimento ponto-a-ponto, tarifa ponto-a-ponto, etc.\"

Concordo com a Jane que é difícil achar um termo que sirva para todas as situações; não existe. Mas como voce está em busca de um substantivo, eu sugiro ‘service’. Quando você vai a um restaurante ou loja e é mal atendido por exemplo, pelo menos nos EUA, você fala do ‘bad service’ do estabelecimento. You say stuff like “the service here is bad” ou “the worst service I\'ve had.”

‘Customer service’ na minha opinião é o que a Jane explicou; mais específico quando você precisa de auxílio para devolver alguma coisa, reclamar de algo etc.
