Also called "tail coverage", in the context of liability insurance for attorneys in the US, e.g.,
“Tail” Coverage: A lawyer’s exposure for claims arising from work done during a particular policy period extends well past the expiration of the policy period, since such a claim may not be made for several years after the work is performed. This exposure is often referred to as “tail exposure”, because it trails the attorney like a tail trails an animal. “Tail coverage” is generally referred to as the coverage for this exposure provided under an Extended Reporting Period (ERP) or ERC, supra.
In your own description it says "na data de celebração do contrato de seguro" which means "on the date of execution of the agreement", as I mentioned below. The grace period applies to new contracts/policies, until the date of effectiveness of the coverage. The "período descoberto" refers to the period between the end of effectveness of that agreement and the date of renewal+first payment of the renewed contract. It's two different things. The latter is not a grace period, by definition. You are the one making the confusion, Richard.
PERÍODO DE CARÊNCIA - Período com início na data de celebração do contrato de seguro, ou na data de um sinistro, e durante o qual a garantia de certos riscos não produz efeitos.
That is what you incorrectly described as 'periodo de descoberto' in your first db entry.
1 day 5 hrs after Tobias posted his answer, I gave him my AGREE. 2 days 18 hrs after I posted mine, and obviously after I had already agreed with Tobias, you come in with your RED DISAGREE. That's what I call pathetic! I didn't take my answer down, just to show that I was wrong (after Douglas gave us more info) and I'm not a coward to admit it and left it there and agreed with Tobias, to show everyone that I'm an upright and honest guys. You on the other hand, I see that you like to come around and create controversy, bruhaha ....that's all you do here on this forum. I have seen you do this time and again for a few years now. Regarding EN natives, just because I don't have an Anglo-Saxon name does not mean I that I don't speak and write English at a native level. I grew up in the United States. If you're trying to say that your English is better just because you are British, please don't be so conceited.
If Douglas sees the term "período de carência" in this document, he'll have an issue if he translates the "período de descoberto" as grace period. You can all search Google and find documents with both terms (período de carência and período de descobert) in the same document, and realize they are two different things. Y'all have a great day. It's not up to me anymore.
It is a joke, albeit a crappy one; you leave up an answer which is obviously wrong, after giving a certainty of 4 (four), Mario agrees with you after saying 'The period of grace is a non-covered period when the policy is executed, BEFORE the coverage period begins, so it does no apply in this case.', which is also wrong, and then you act like a big baby when someone disagrees with your wrong answer, and then you wonder why real native speakers hardly bother contributing answers anymore.
"If you know it's wrong, hide it, makes the whole site look amateurish and a joke." Who the hell are you to say "the whole site look amateurish and a joke"..... If there's anyone here immature and amateurish it's you ! Take a look at my KudoZ stats and call me amateurish! You want to go around spread your red DISAGREES, do it if you feel like it, but sooner or later everyone here on the Forum will know your reputation. I have better things to do than debate this crap with you. I have work that actually pays me. This here, I do in my spare time.
Re: "It's not exactly a grace period, since it has a partial coverage."
There is no "partial coverage." It says "cobertura a reclamações", i.e., you can file claims for stuff that went down in the covered period, *after* (crucially) the covered period has ended.
It's not exactly a grace period, since it has a partial coverage. But I guess it's ok to use the term, as long as Douglas doesn't have anothe stretch in the same document mentioning the actual grace period (no coverage in new policies until the first payment instead of a partial coverage period until policy renewal).
"Knowing your insurance company’s grace period is key to keeping your coverage in force. Insurers will generally give you a cushion of time past your premium due date to pay up and still have your claims covered. But if you exceed that grace period, your insurance company could cancel your policy."
My reading of this is that if you pay up during the grace period, you can still get your claim(s) covered. The safest course of action is to ask the insurance company. Only they would know. What's good for one may not be good for all.
The period of grace is a non-covered period when the policy is executed, BEFORE the coverage period begins, so it does no apply in this case. The period konwn as "descoberto" is between the end of the effectiveness of the coverage of a policy and before the renewal or new policy. So it's not actually a grace period, yet a period "uncovered" by the comprehensive policy.

"A grace period is the provision in most loan and insurance contracts that allows payment to be received for a certain period of time after the actual due date. During this period, no late fees are charged, and the late payment does not result in default or cancellation of the loan. A typical grace period is 15 days."
