Portuguese to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents - Law: Taxation & Customs / relates to seizure of goods for non-payment of duties
Portuguese term or phrase: vedação
It's hard to explain the context, but it relates to a good being seized in customs and I have translated it as blocked from being released. All the translations I have found relate to fences or borders. Anyone have a good idea?

English translation:legal prohibition
Explanation:
vedação: prohibition

"Common carriers and public carriers are under duty to carry goods lawfully delivered to them for carriage. The duty to carry does not prevent carriers from refusing to transport goods that they do not purport to carry generally. Carriers may indeed restrict the commodities that they will carry. Further, everywhere, carriers may refuse to carry dangerous goods, improperly packed goods, and goods that they are unable to carry on account of size, legal prohibition, or lack of facilities."

holding

Explanation:
As a substantive, "holding" is the suggested word in such a customs clearance situation.
"Prevented from being released" would be an option in a verbal construction.

For instance,

a) The holding of goods by customs will last untill all legal import duties and charges are fully paid.

b) "Goods will be prevented from being released from customs untill all legal import duties and charges are fully paid.

In Brazil, the Portuguese word for goods temporarily held by customs is "retenção".
So, you have "mercadorias retidas na alfândega" = "goods held by customs", or
"A retenção das mercadorias na alfândega está prevista, já que o importador não apresentou a fatura e o romaneirio". = "The holding of goods by customs is expected because the importer failed to submit an invoice and packing list".
