Portuguese term or phrase: complicada
I'm not sure I understand the meaning of the word "complicada" in this sentence: "Todavia, a garganta está mesmo complicada e uma única sentença cabe." The main character has just recovered consciousness after being beaten, so it must mean something along the lines of raw or rough? Complicated would of course not fit the context here. Thanks!

Explanation:
This is a one possibility.

However, my throat is (still) playing up and one phrase shall thus suffice.
