In a manuscript document from the Portuguese Inquisition records of 1646, one woman is denounced for witchcraft by name.
She is identified first as "Mariana dessa neta da dita esperança pinheiro" and later as "a mesma Mariana dessa."
Neither is part of a full sentence, but each phrase is in a list of those accused of different religious faults; thus the second quote reads in full: "E que a mesma Mariana dessa é feiticeira e usa em seus feitiços . . . pedra d'ara." (And that the same Mariana __ is a sorceress and uses in her sorcery [some] altar-stone.)
What does "dessa" mean here? "Of that" does not make sense.
I understand that Mariana is the grand-daughter of the said Esperança Pinheiro, and that the second reference is to the "same Mariana."
Could "dessa" be her last name, in some variation of "de Sá"? Or, could she be a resident "of that" unnamed town?
