Si può dire che con il viaggio di Pedro Álvares Cabral le scoperte portoghesi siano giunte a termine. L’obiettivo che stava alla base delle spedizioni della fine del XV secolo, cioè la rotta delle spezie, fu raggiunto, e non aveva quindi più senso inviare navi per effettuare nuove scoperte
