peer agreement (net): +4sound mix Explanation: Film Sound Mix Film Sound Mix, located in Park 138b and 138c, is the place where the edited tracks of sound for motion picture productions are mixed down. Every year, more than 100 student projects, with a total running time in excess of 15 hours, find their way through this facility. The filmmaker enters this facility with their edited picture and soundtracks. Students who are enrolled in or have successfully completed the Film Sound course operate as the engineers for the mixing process. Loudness, tonal quality, transitions, timing, ambient effects are all adjusted using the edited picture for reference, then recorded to a single 16mm magnetic film master under the supervision of the filmmaker. The film sound mix machine room contains a 16mm magnetic film dubber/recorder, five 16mm dubbers, and a rotary prism telecine, all manufactured by Magnatech. For films whose sound designs use more than five tracks of sound, film sound mix control room has Otari audio tape recorders that are computer controlled through Timeline synchronization equipment to maintain sync with the picture. This equipment offers the capability of transferring 16mm magnetic film tracks over to 1/4" audio tape with SMPTE timecode, so that up to ten tracks of sound can be mixed at a time. Access to this facility is restricted to students enrolled in film production courses, with the operation of any equipment in the room further restricted to students who are enrolled in or have successfully completed the course, Film Sound. Supervision of the set-up and mixing operations is the responsibility of the instructor for Film Sound or the Post-production Facilities Supervisor.
