L'utilisation plus spécifique du terme comme lac de montagne provient des régions montagneuses du nord de l'Angleterre, où le nom tarn désigne tous les étangs. Le terme conserve une utilisation plus large puisqu'il peut s'agir d'un étang ou d'un petit lac, peu importe où il se trouve ou son origine. Un bon exemple est le Talkin Tarn trouvé près de Brampton, en Cumbria, en Angleterre.
