It is recommended that the octane rating of gasoline be reduced by (to 8 units) for increasing the combustion speed of the mixture.

I've translated the sentence like this, but I don't understand what it means - could anyone enlighten me? Octane ratings seems to be much higher (70s-120) - so I don't understand how the 8 fits in.
