Explanation:
Нулевой цикл has a particular meaning in the building industry, I think "the footings", but you wouldn't use that here. Built up from the foundations might be possible, but built up from nothing is really what this means, I think.

Broken encoding in my previous posting - apologies.

For Dorene - \"from scratch\" is really used in everyday life, but it IS used in engineering, too. Please, make an effort of entering the word combination into any Internet search engine before jumping to \"green\" (and incorrect) peer-comments - it does not look professional at all.

Even a native speaker (and a translator/interpreter) cannot possibly know all the range of usage for a specific phrase, especially if it is used as a term in different industries. You can never fathom how the word can travel and what it will eventually mean unless you actually know the meaning for a certain industry (and I worked in engineering for many years).

Example - you know the word \"red\", right? What would you think \"the red\" would mean? Well, in the industry \"where I am from\" it means \"(packed) red blood cells\". \"The white\" would mean \"blood plasma\". Would it mean, in your opnion, that you cannot use \"white\" or \"red\" in your everyday speech?

One link even points to a book sold on Amazon.com, it is about building a home from scratch, and \"build from scratch\" is in the title, without quotes.

As to baking a cake from scratch, the phrase is used like that, too - why not. You have to stress it here in the US that the cake was made from scratch, because it\'s a \"vanishing art\", in Russia I wouldn\'t say anybody would even have to say it - it\'s assumed, people are still baking cakes this way most of the time.

Explanation:
Very common in Sakhalin project English originals. Believe it or not, if not for confidentiality reasons, I could post a whole excerpt from one original saying "build in the green fields of XXX" т.е."в чистом поле", на неосвоенной территории, с нулевого цикла. Однако, я бы все-таки stick with grass root version.
