Hi there!

A few weeks ago I posted a question concerning a slogan: 'Ahead in Vitality'. I received a couple of translations in Russian, but now I have to give a literal translation of the exact words of the Russian version.

English translation:livelier in vitality

Explanation:
This is the literal translation. Живее is the comparative of живой, so has to be the above, or "more alive"; and жизненность is vitality.

Based on Akhmanova's Русско-английский словарь.

But I must say I prefer your original less literal translation!

Webster takes a rather more pragmatic approach to comparatives:

Be careful not to form comparatives or superlatives of adjectives which already express an extreme of comparison — unique, for instance — although it probably is possible to form comparative forms of most adjectives: something can be more perfect, and someone can have a fuller figure. People who argue that one woman cannot be more pregnant than another have never been nine-months pregnant with twins.

Examples: unique, Roman, dead, favorite, empty.

The tour guide has to be either a French person or not,
so cannot be described as "very" French.

incorrect: The antique was the most unique.
Unique means one of a kind. Something cannot be more one of a
kind than it already is.

incorrect: This is my most favourite toy.
Again, favourite means something you like above all others.
If it is your favourite, how can it be any more so than it already is?

danya: есть ещё такая вещь, как стилистически мотивированное авторское использование. вы сейчас звучите как школьник, который прочитал у Лермонтова "из пламя и света рождённое слово", и исправляет ему "пламя" на "пламени"

-> Faced with 103,000 examples, you still refuse to believe that "more alive" is possible? Why? This is a belief that passeth all understanding. And "superlative" does not have the comparative "superlativer"!

Dylan Edwards: "Alive" can be used either as an absolute, the opposite of "dead", in which case it has no comparative, or in the sense of "lively", in which case it certainly has a comparative.

Попробую примирить стороны. Александру- почему вы зациклились на alive?Словари(которые я тоже очень уважаю,поверьте) дают возможность выбора.Во-первых-живее-сравнительная форма от прилагательного живой, а оно переводится и как lively/полный жизни/(livelier,the most lively).Во-вторых,если я правильно запомнила,речь идет о сое,которая дает энергию жизни и пр.пр.Поэтому можно употребить agile(agiler),spritely(spritelier)-оживленный.Alive -это только в смыыле биологически жив(т.е. не мертвый),но я уверена,что речь не о этом в данном выражении(как и Ленине,кстати)-это же все в переносном смысле.
