В связи с разработкой керамических масс на основе местной девонской глины для произдводства бутылок плотного черепка надо было разработать легкоплавкую глазурь, которая являлась бы реакционноспособной с керамической массой.

I can see that this is some sort of hard, dense surface or surface layer (the glaze is applied in a thickness of 0.3-0.5 mm), but I haven't been able to come up with the right technical jargon for it.

The article is mostly about analyzing aluminosilicate glasses to be used for glazes.
