Russian term or phrase: матрица (в контексте)
This is a sentence comparing the Latin lower-case 'l' to the Cyrillic lower-case 'г' (which the author describes as the most unprepossessing of all the lower-case characters), and it is one of the reasons given for why 'l' is better:

"Даже латинская l, простая, как палка, лучше: она встроена в латинскую матрицу."

"embedded in the Latin matrix"?
"built into the Latin matrix"?

I'm not that sure matrix is right here, maybe mould? But even if it were matrix or mould, I'm not sure what the author is getting at. What does it mean and why would it make the 'l' better?

All suggestions most gratefully received :)

I think I'd put something like: it's [an integrated] part of the Latin character set.

Explanation:
I think матрица is used figuratively, not as a term

the author wants to say that l is sor tof aligned with other Latin letters in terms of look and feel, so to speak, it is in line with the spirit of the letters (pun intedned)
