Spanish term or phrase: salón clandestino
This is from a text about a brother in Santiago that under the military dictatorship was turned into a "salon clandestino":

clandestine center (in your context)

Explanation:
In the context of dictatorships, I would write "a brothel (...) turned into a clandestine center". If you find more context in your text, you can be more specific, "clandestine operations center" or "clandestine detention center".

backroom

Explanation:
A couple of definitions of "backroom": a room in which work or other activities are done out of public view or secretly (Cambridge English Dictionary); the meeting place of a directing group that exercises its authority in an inconspicuous and indirect way (Merriam Webster)

agree  Charles Davis: Yes! Club is just the right word. "Club room" would do when referring to the actual space. See this dissertation, esp. pp. 75-83; photo (no. 12) of the salón on p. 198: https://tinyurl.com/y4c6fouu . Could even say "underground drag club"?

-> Thanks, Charles! No doubt about it from the photos, and adding drag is a good idea. Funny to see Boy George on P197, along with Freddie and David!
