administration/taking of oath/affirmation Explanation: It's usually "protesta"; "protesto" is a less frequent variant, presumably because that's what the person pronouncing the oath/affirmation says, or perhaps due to confusion with the notarial "protesto" on bills of exchange. Depending on who is doing the "toma", because sometimes it refers to the person administering the oath or affirmation ("protesta"/"protesto"), and sometimes it refers to the person taking it, although strictly speaking I believe it is supposed to refer to the person doing the administering (but like all things, these lines become blurred once someone gets the wrong end of the stick and runs with it). |
