Estaría correcto decir: "An excess of these nutrients can be even harmful to health when it is not needed".

Contexto: Ese cuando no es necesario se refiere a la suplementación que se menciona en una oración anterior ya que puede ser incluso perjudicial si ciertos nutrientes se consumen en exceso.
