Usurpadas sus tierras, operó entonces un nuevo despojo: fueron sometidos a un nuevo orden ya no como indios, sino bajo otras categorías que expresaban la desigualdad. Quedaron cautivos dentro de las estancias, haciendas y fincas de sus anteriores encomenderos y vecinos estancieros, que acapararon sus tierras. Pasaron de ser encomendados y tributarios a ser “arrenderos”, “agregados”, “gente de servicio”, “dependientes”. Dejaron de figurar como indios en los padrones y censos, y pasaron a figurar como peones, criados, sirvientes.

agree  Chema Nieto Castañón: Yes, also tenant farmers, or sharecroppers, as Brent puts it. But probably your option tenant labourer is more appropriate as it is a bit more wider than just "farmer".
