This word "consulta" is giving me some problems in this text. It appears on nearly every page so I want to make sure I get it right. Usually it's a noun but sometimes it's a verb.

I know that "consulta" generally means "inquiry" or "query". However, I'm wondering if it's more along the lines of "search" when it's a noun and possibly "view" when it's a verb, given that this is talking about a software system.

Could anyone who works in the field of IT let me know what you think the most appropriate word for both the noun and the verb would be.

By the way, I understand "ficha contable" to be an "accounting record".

I read your question and explanation. You ask about a good translation of the Spanish term “consulta” in you case and you include in the list of possible translations the term “search” and “view”.

The Diccionario Espasa concise inglés-español, edition 2000 Espasa Calpe says about: “consulta” (búsqueda de información) “search”.

I agree that the term “query” is also used as translation of “consulta” but normally when you use the “query” commands in the data base management systems, the “query” is a question (“pregunta”).

But when you look for information, the process of “consulta” is a “search” or “search and view”. In other words, the terms “search” includes more than a “query” and it has extensive use in relation with software systems. Before the creation of the database programs that made famous the “query” questions, the “search” was used every time that somebody needed to make a “consulta”. You find the verb “search” in old and new Cobol programs, in the commands of the electronic spreadsheets, in the commands of the IBM mainframe operating systems and also now in Google and the Internet search machines.

For this reason, my proposal includes the following suggestions:

1) - search an accounting record. (Option 1, 2 or 3 depending of the construction of the sentence)
2) - search accounting record.
3) - accounting record search.
4) - view an accounting record. (Option 4, 5 or 6 depending of the construction of the sentence)
5) - view accounting record.
6) - accounting record view.
7) - search and view of an accounting record. (If you prefer to remark the two verbs related with the “consulta de la información”: “search” and “view”)

From a technical perspective, the term “search” includes “view”. For example, when you make a “search” with the function “search” that Google and other search machines (Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL..) offer, the system searches for you and after that it gives you the option to view the information, for example the accounting record. I don’t know if you know, that Google offers its own “search procedure or algorithm” to be included in different blogs and Internet pages. In particular, the “search” of Google has different options, to search only in a page, in all the document or file, and more. In all the cases, after the search, it shows a partial or complete view of the information that it found).

I think you're right about using "accounting records" to translate "fichas contables".

It seems that you can use query for "consulta" and "check or check for something" to translate "consultar". This is what I've seen with SAP and SQL.
