Swedish term or phrase: Felavgränsning
Is this "locating the error" or "defining the error" or even "limiting errors"?

Pinpointing errors
Explanation:
I like "troubleshooting," as it does convey the process of identifying the problem. But it is often used in a broader sense to convey the two processes of first identifying and then solving the problem (felavgränsning + felavhjälpning), and since this sentence contains the latter process separately in "förslag på åtgärder," I would opt for a more narrow translation for "felavgränsning" here. From link below: "Athena has a built-in validator for pinpointing errors
Athena validates the tagged document before an XML file can be generated. It checks that the tagging structure is valid and pinpoints error locations for the user with appropriate error messages. It also runs various checks on cross-references and their targets and generates an error report in the event of errors."

Excellent suggestion. "Troubleshooting and pinpointing errors" works well in this context. The broad and then the narrow focus.

fault localisation

Explanation:
A Google search for "fault localisation" and "netowrk problems" brings up several hits, so I think this is an acceptable translation.

Last time I looked, troubleshooting was the general term
used for felavsökning. Anyway, you fail to indicated how your suggestion
of a general phrase is a) an acceptable English equivalent for felavgränsning
b) how to distinguish in English using specialised terms and not general phrases between the two aforementioned Swedish terms.

disagree  Sven Petersson: Please see my answer! - Addendum: Your suggestion is close to the Swedish "felsökning", which is not the same as "felavgränsning". Google "felavgränsning felsökning"!

-> Your suggestion does not convey the sense of the Swedish, which is that of identify the source of the fault. You could for exampel use your phrase equally well for felsökning. So how would you distinguish between these terms in the same translation?

troubleshooting

Explanation:
I suspect this is the established English term that come closest to the Swedish term in meaning.

"Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to repair failed products or processes. It is a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem so that it can be solved, and so the product or process can be made operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to develop and maintain complex systems where the symptoms of a problem can have many possible causes. Troubleshooting is used in many fields such as engineering, system administration, electronics, automotive repair, and diagnostic medicine. Troubleshooting requires identification of the malfunction(s) or symptoms within a system. Then, experience is commonly used to generate possible causes of the symptoms. Determining which cause is most likely is often a process of elimination - eliminating potential causes of a problem. Finally, troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state.

In general, troubleshooting is the identification of, or diagnosis of "trouble" in the management flow of a corporation or a system caused by a failure of some kind. The problem is initially described as symptoms of malfunction, and troubleshooting is the process of determining and remedying to the causes of these symptoms."

Actually, I don't agree with Wikipedia that troubleshooting involves _remedying_ causes of errors.

With regard to "determining" the causes of errors:
"Felavgränsning" is a process of step by step excluding possible causes; pushed to its limit, this process will eventually result in determining the right cause.

disagree  Sven Petersson: "Felavgränsning" is not "the process of determining and remedying to the causes of these symptoms", it's far less!

-> Agree, on that specific point troubleshooting (as def. by Wikip) is wider in meaning. But overall this term covers the processes we refer to by "felavgränsning" and would be the term most naturally used by English-speaking persons to refer to that process

agree  Christopher Schröder: In a non-specific context I would agree that this is the best solution. Otherwise narrowing down or diagnosing errors might work.

Error limitation

Explanation:
Was married to a computer programmer and I seem to recall something like this, i.e. there is an error but you can limit the impact of that error when it has occurred. (If someone else knows a more definite term for this, I bow to that person's superior knowledge.)
