Skotska kalvinistiska finansmännen vände systematiskt på ***räntesyn*** en och visade nyttan med lånade pengar.

but unofficially, I'm not sure I really get what this sentence means. What exactly were they doing with the räntesyn?

Manipulating some kind of financial system?
