Food & Drink
Swedish term or phrase: råvaror
Hi!

I am translating a report about food and drink and wonder what the English expression is for "råvaror" in this context?

I don't want to use "raw materials", as it makes me think of steel, metals etc.

Examples of usage:
Råvarorna har stor betydelse för matupplevelse och kvalitet, men kunskap och inspiration är lika viktiga.
Få vet att falukorv och pesto inte är råvaror.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

agree  Christine Andersen: I would go for ingredients and modify as appropriate in each context - basic ingredients is sometimes useful when ´raw´ ingredients is not entirely appropriate

disagree  Sven Petersson: Does not work in "Få vet att falukorv och pesto inte är råvaror".

raw ingredients

Explanation:
See the link for pairings in Google results for råvaror + "raw ingredients".

Both falukorv and pesto could be ingredients in a recipe and listed as such, but neither is a raw ingredient. See second link for examples for pesto in this context.

Explanation:
This is what I can think of after reading and cooking from my collection of over 250 cookery books over the years. Sven's right in that "raw" ingredients wouldn't always work when used in connection with meat for obvious reasons. Ingredients on its own could be used in places because it stands to reason that any recipe is made of various ingredients. I'd imagine you'd need to vary it - not one of those instances where one term can remain consistent in my opinion.
