järvträsk wolverine lake Explanation: You should not translate geographical names. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 9 mins (2005-06-23 07:24:23 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Järv = wolverine träsk = swamp (in standard Swedish; but in Northern Swedish geographical names, \'träsk\' means \"lake\".) In general, you should not translate geographical names unless they are already well known by a translated name in the language you are translating to (example: Roma in Italian is Rome in English and Rom in Swedish - this is an established standard. BUT - \'Vaxholm\' should not be translated into \'Isle of Wax\'). Since Järvträsk is not familiar to the vast majority of English speakers, it should be called Järvträsk and nothing else. That being said, Wolverine Lake is what it *means* in English. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 32 mins (2005-06-23 07:47:51 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Yes, \'fen\' means \'myr\', \'kärr\', \'träsk\', \'sankmark\' in Swedish - so I guess it might work - I have never been to Järvträsk myself so I don\'t know what type of body of water it is that gave the village its name. If it\'s a lake I think you should use \"lake\" and not \"fen\", but if it is something that more closely resembles a \'kärr\' or \'myrmark\', then I guess it is fine. |
