Your example, Peter, shows how a proper name in the possessive form in Swedish could be translated using the proper name in the definite form in English. The same construction could be used in Swedish, only we would need to make it a compund word as well as put it in definite form, resulting in "Stockholmsskärgården".
Madeleine's claim is a different kettle of fish in that in her example, an adjective takes on the form of a noun while continuing to function as an adjective. Would you prefer "the Sweden archipelago" to "the Swedish archipelago"?

I cannot provide any academic support, but it does seem increasingly normal. For example, "Stockholms skärgård" I would translate as "the Stockholm archipelago".

In Madeleine's comment to Sven's answer she makes the statement that "Current EN usage calls for "nounification" of complex terms - i.e. Japan coast rather than Japanese coast". Please, Madeleine, if this is the case, give us valid academic references to support your claim. I would possibly allow the phenomenon in a news headline, but that is as far as I would go. In any other context I can only interpret such usage as bad English, at least from my Australian horizon.
