call holding; mute function


Explanation:
"call holding" is where the line is kept open but the party put "on hold" cannot hear what is being received by the called receiver.
"mute function" is an equivalent function performed at the called receiver itself rather than at the local exchange switch.

(I misstated.) Actually, under "call holding" neither party can hear the other.
Under "mute function" the receiving party can hear the calling party, but the calling party cannot hear the receiving party.
