Turkish term or phrase: imam hatip
Greetings,

I had always thought that “Hatip” was the name of a particular imam, but apparently not.

But if, as what I have read recently seems to imply, it's an adjective specifying the kind of imam (meaning something like “hutbe-giving imam), shouldn't it be before the noun i.e. “hatip imam”?

Then again, don't all imams give a hutbe on Fridays?

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

imam-preacher
Explanation:
Imams are not only the ones who lead the prayer, but also the lecturer on certain occasions. They preach and lecture about various subjects during prayers, such as Friday prayer. Even though preach may implicate a biblical meaning, using it with imam will absolutely tell about its purpose and content of the lecture. Please take a look at the link provided.

Forgot to add, imams are not only trained and educated to lead the prayers, but also to lecture. So, preaching is a part of their overall responsibilities. I used to read about those who had good skills in preaching as they were praised by various sources (media, some relevant authorities etc.) in Turkey.

Another note; the way that it is said in Turkish is like "imam-hatip", referring to two different functions. Those both are two different roles converged in one person.

Why don't I get an agreement? :))))) Some hard feelings? :)

Explanation:
If you're referring to the "Imam Hatip Lisesi" or "Imam Hatip Okulları", I think you should keep it that way. "Imam Hatip High School" or "Imam Hatip Schools".

imam hatip (lycée)

Explanation:
If you are tallking about the high schools called "imam-hatips", then you had better use "Imam Hatip Lycées" because these schools are unique to Turkey and their graduates do not necessarily become an imam or preacher. These are high schools which have a regular lycée cirriculum with extra religious lessons.

Believe me, as I have graduated from one:)
