As I was going through the mail today I opened something from the group Doctors Without Borders. On one of the pages was a list of some of the things they did in 2012. With all of the cynicism and callousness in the world today, and with all of the violence and cruelty there is, I could not help but smile one of those complex smiles one gets when one sees good, but knows the need for it is because of the lack of good in some places in the world.
Doctors Without Borders took care of 8,316,000 in outpatient and 472,900 in inpatient care in 2012. They helped 1,642, 800 people with malaria, nearly 350,000 children with malnutrition, almost 31,000 with tuberculosis, about 58,000 with cholera, 717, 000 with measles, almost 500,000 with meningitis, and many other sick, injured, and traumatized people who would have likely had little care given some of the many truly difficult places this group works in.
One of the biggest problems in some parts of the world, such as sub-Saharan Africa is dirty water. This group distributed 54 million gallons of clean water where there was none. This may seem like a clean drop in the huge bucket of disease ridden water in places like Africa where 5,500 children die every day from dirty water, but this and many other groups are out there trying to at least make some difference.
This group was started in France in 1971. It has about 27,000 people. These medical professionals from many fields are supported by staffs in various countries. Their work is focused on areas of crises. Many of these people in the field could be comfortably in very profitable offices in their home countries, yet they decided to go to some of the worst places in the world to make a difference.
When I looked at the interactive map on their website I was amazed at the variety of places they have worked in from Japan after the tsunami and earthquake in 2011 to the Philippines after the recent devastating storm to Uzbekistan to work on tuberculosis to Libya during the recent conflicts to Lesotho and other areas in Africa to help reduce deaths of mothers during childbirth, which is a huge problem in many parts of Africa. In Turkey they have helped during major earthquakes and have been helping with the massive refugee health issues coming out of Syria.
Sometimes more can be done to help resolve crisis with caring doctors and nurses than with bombs and bullets. Sometimes saving the life of a poor, sickly child riddled with malnutrition and freezing in the small tent can mean more than all of the high-powered diplomatic meeting in five-star hotels and conference halls with people in suits and evening dresses more expensive than all of the food and medicine some of these children might get in many years.
Doctors Without Borders got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. However, for some reason I cannot see their doctors, nurses and others thinking much about this as they work very long hours trying to help people in extremely difficult places. They are there for different reasons.
They want to help people in caught up on crises. Their goals are medical and health related. Their charter states clearly that they are not to pick sides places of conflict. I respect and admire that.
If I were a poor father with a very sick child in a place of crisis I would want these sorts of people to be there.
We need more people like them.

Obesity is fast becoming a major global public health crisis. While it has long been a major problem in developed countries, it is becoming increasingly common in developing countries as well. We wonder: Of the world’s 20 major economies, how many have obesity rates of at least 25%?
Answers: A. Three

A. Three is not correct.
Among the G20 countries, three have obesity rates above 30%, according to estimates by the World Health Organization. The United States is by far the leader, with 46.3% of its population considered obese (defined as having a body mass index of 30 or above). It is followed by two Latin American countries: Argentina (37.6%) and Mexico (35.5%).
Globally, there are more than one billion overweight adults — with 300 million people considered obese. Since 1980, obesity rates have risen by three-fold or more in some areas of North America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This is largely due to reduced physical activity and increased consumption of nutrient-poor foods with too much sugar and saturated fat.

Of the G20 countries, seven have obesity rates of 25% or above. In addition to the United States, Argentina and Mexico, they include Saudi Arabia (29.7% of whose population is obese), Australia (28.8%), Canada (25.6%) and the United Kingdom (25%).
Such high obesity levels have become a major public health concern because obesity is a key risk factor for chronic diseases such as type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, hypertension and stroke.

There are ten countries among the G20 that have obesity rates of over 20%. They include Germany (22.5%), South Africa (22.2%) and Turkey (21.6%).
High rates of obesity are a key cause of rising healthcare costs in the developed world, with obesity accounting for 2-6% of total healthcare costs in many developed countries. In the United States alone, the costs of medical care related to obesity reach $150 billion a year by some estimates.
D. Fourteen is not correct.
There are altogether 14 countries among the G20 in which over 10% of the population is obese, including Brazil (18.4%), Russia (16.6%), Italy (14.1%) and South Korea (11.5%).
While obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent in developing countries, the obesity rates in the world’s most populous emerging economies are still quite low. For example, the rate stands at just 3.8% in China and 1.9% in India. Despite their steady economic growth, malnutrition is still a much more pressing concern in these countries.
