Preface
A preface to the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants written 17 February 1835, and signed by all four members of the committee who compiled the volume.
To the members of the church of the Latter Day Saints —
Dear Brethren:
We deem it to be unnecessary to entertain you with a lengthy preface to the following volume, but merely to say that it contains, in short, the leading items of the religion which we have professed to believe.
The first part of the book will be found to contain a series of lectures as delivered before a theological class in this place, and in consequence of their embracing the important doctrine of salvation, we have arranged them into the following work.
The second part contains items or principles for the regulation of the church, as taken from the revelations which have been given since its organization, as well as from former ones.
There may be an aversion in the minds of some against receiving anything purporting to be articles of religious faith, in consequence of there being so many now extant; but if men believe a system, and profess that it was given by inspiration, certainly, the more intelligibly they can present it, the better. It does not make a principle untrue to print it, neither does it make it true not to print it.
The church, viewing this subject to be of importance, appointed through their servants and delegates — the high council, your servants — to select and compile this work. Several reasons might be adduced in favor of this move of the council, but we only add a few words. They knew that the church was evil spoken of in many places — its faith and belief misrepresented, and the way of truth thus subverted. By some it was represented as disbelieving the Bible, by others as being an enemy to all good order and uprightness, and by others as being injurious to the peace of all governments, civil and political.
We have therefore endeavored to present, though in few words, our belief; and when we say this, humbly trust the faith and principles of this society as a body.
We do not present this little volume with any other expectation than that we are to be called to answer to every principle advanced, in that day when the secrets of all hearts will be revealed, and the reward of every man’s labor will be given him.
With sentiments of esteem and sincere respect, we subscribe ourselves your brethren in the bonds of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A los miembros de la iglesia de los Santos de los Últimos Días —
Queridos Hermanos:
Consideramos que es innecesario entretenerles con un largo prefacio al siguiente volumen, sino simplemente decir que contiene, en resumen, los elementos principales de la religión que hemos profesado creer.
Se encontrará que la primera parte del libro contiene una serie de conferencias impartidas ante una clase de teología en este lugar, y como consecuencia de que abarcan la importante doctrina de la salvación, las hemos organizado en la siguiente obra.
La segunda parte contiene elementos o principios para la regulación de la iglesia, tomados de las revelaciones que se han dado desde su organización, así como de las anteriores.
Puede haber una aversión en la mente de algunos contra recibir cualquier cosa que pretenda ser artículos de fe religiosa, como consecuencia de que existen tantos en la actualidad; pero si los hombres creen en un sistema, y profesan que fue dado por inspiración, ciertamente, cuanto más inteligiblemente puedan presentarlo, mejor. No hace que un principio sea falso al imprimirlo, ni tampoco hace que sea cierto al no imprimirlo.
La iglesia, viendo este tema como importante, designó por medio de sus siervos y delegados, el sumo consejo, sus servidores para seleccionar y compilar esta obra. Se podrían aducir varias razones a favor de esta acción del consejo, pero sólo agregamos unas pocas palabras. Ellos sabían que se hablaba mal de la iglesia en muchos lugares — su fe y creencia se tergiversaban, y el camino de la verdad por lo tanto se subvertía. Algunos la representaban como incrédula de la Biblia, otros como enemiga de todo buen orden y rectitud y otros como perjudicial para la paz de todos los gobiernos, civiles y políticos.
Por lo tanto, nos hemos esforzado por presentar, aunque en pocas palabras, nuestra creencia; y cuando decimos esto, confiamos humildemente en la fe y los principios de esta sociedad como un cuerpo.
No presentamos este pequeño volumen con ninguna otra expectativa que la que debamos ser llamados a responder a cada principio avanzado, en ese día en que sean revelados los secretos de todos los corazones, y se le dé la recompensa del trabajo de cada hombre.
Con sentimientos de estima y respeto sincero, nos suscribimos como sus hermanos en los lazos del evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
