Le présent se mua pour Prokop en futur révolu ; chaque fois qu’il se trouvait avec Olbram, Prokop ne pouvait s’empêcher de penser que ce moment qu’ils étaient en train de partager était déjà un passé à venir. Le moindre geste, rire ou regard de son fils provoquaient en lui une étrange émotion, comme si c’était, simultanément, la première et la dernière fois qu’Olbram bougeait, parlait, riait, posait sur lui son regard. Tout s’imposait d’emblée comme souvenir anticipé, tout se faisait par avance nostalgie. La mélancolie du futur antérieur endolorissait les heures du bonheur présent. Plus les jours filaient et plus cette rupture, ce décrochement intérieur du temps s’aggravaient. Le présent se dilatait et les deux autres dimensions temporelles y mugissaient en sourdine d’une voix blanche et obsédante. Même lorsqu’il se trouvait avec ses amis à l’Ourson Blanc en train de boire et de bavarder, ce glissement se produisait et soudain, la bouffée qu’il venait de tirer de sa cigarette, la gorgée de vin qu’il avalait, le morceau de pain ou de fromage qu’il portait à sa bouche prenaient une saveur nouvelle, intense. La saveur de la dernière cigarette, de la gorgée finale, de l’ultime bouchée, - mais avant quoi ? La vie était là pourtant, plus dense et vivace que jamais, il la ressentait par tous les pores de sa peau, dans toutes les fibres de sa chair. La vie était là, sonore, mouvante, palpable, - pour mieux se taire, se retirer un jour prochain. Prokop se tenait là, dans le brouhaha de la salle, pleinement présent et attentif à tout ce qui bougeait et palpitait autour de lui, les cinq sens aiguisés à l’extrême, et dans le même instant il se sentait propulsé en des zones éloignées du temps, exilé dans les marges du futur, rejeté en un passé imminent. Ce paradoxe en engendrant d’autres, plus Prokop se faisait vigilant, requis par le moindre détail, et plus il devenait distrait. Il s’absentait par excès de présence. Il était frappé d’un don étrange, celui d’une ubiquité dans le temps. ‘Hé ho ! Prokop, réveille-toi !’ lui criaient ses amis devant son air hagard. Mais il ne dormait pas, loin de là ; il s’épuisait en un marathon insensé entre le futur et le passé au cœur même du présent. Il engrangeait chaque sensation, chaque seconde vécue, dans l’énorme entrepôt de sa mémoire. Tout en vrac, - le goût des nourritures, les voix, les rires, les allées et venues des serveuses, le tintement des verres, les mouvements et la chaleur des corps, les expressions des visages. Il n’osait pas avouer cela à ses amis… Alors il souriait, plaisantait, pour ne pas montrer combien il était essoufflé. C’est qu’on ne s’improvise pas à la légère coureur de fond sur trois dimensions temporelles.	Translation - English And so the countdown to the separation began. Everything was turning into an instant memory before its time, into a longing still to come. The anticipation of this future melancholy was spoiling the times of happiness now. The faster the days flew by the worse this break-up, this inner detachment from time was becoming. The present was expanding and the other two time zones moaned softly within it in a haunting, monotonous voice. Even when he was with his friends having a drink and a chat at the White Bear Cub this shift would take place and suddenly the puff he had just taken from his cigarette, the mouthful of wine he was swallowing, the piece of bread or cheese he was raising to his lips would take on an intense new flavour. The taste of the last cigarette, the last mouthful of wine or food, but the last one before what? And yet life was there, more complex and enduring than ever, he could feel it in every pore of his skin, every fibre of his flesh. Life was there, noisy, changing and palpable only to fall silent and withdraw all the more noticeably, as it would do one day soon. Prokop would stand there in the hubbub of the room, totally present and aware of everything moving and pulsating around him, his five senses heightened to the utmost and at the same moment he would feel himself propelled into faraway time zones, exiled to the fringes of the future, thrown into a past which was imminent. As this paradox created others, as Prokop became more watchful, aware of the smallest detail, the more distracted he became. His magnified awareness of the present was making him absent from it. He was struck by a strange gift, the gift of being everywhere in time. “Hey! Prokop, wake up!” his friends would shout on seeing his distraught face. But he was not asleep, far from it. In the very heart of the present, he was engaged in a mad, exhausting marathon between the future and the past. He was gathering up every sensation, every second lived in the huge repository of his memory. It was all in a jumble – the taste of different foods, voices, laughter, the comings and goings of the waitresses, the clinking of glasses, the movement and warmth of bodies, the expressions on faces. He did not dare admit it to his friends… So he smiled and joked to avoid showing how breathless he was. Suddenly becoming a long-distance runner covering three time zones was not an easy undertaking.

Source text - French De la misère en milieu enseignant Le nouveau ministre de l’éducation nationale s’installe dans ses meubles, et un constat s’impose. De plus en plus d’enseignants vivent dans la confusion, l’inquiétude ou la désespérance, un métier sans boussole, sans tableau de bord et sans directives vraiment lisibles. Depuis des décennies, ils sont soumis au rythme de réformes qui courent après leur ombre au nom d’une hypothétique et encore introuvable démocratisation de l’école. On peut toujours faire semblant de croire qu’on s’en rapproche, alors que l’on voit s’accroître, au contraire, l’exclusion socioscolaire, les violences et autres incivilités, qui en sont l’inévitable prix à payer. Quel enseignant saurait définir avec clarté et certitude les finalités et les missions de l’école soit un minimum commun à partager pour donner à penser qu’ils participent à la même entreprise ? Edgar Pisani, ancien ministre des débuts de la Ve République, indiquait dans une publication récente que le point aveugle de cette République – celle justement de la réforme de l’école – a été « qu’il n’y a jamais eu de débat fondamental sur l’éducation, alors que ce qui est en cause, c’est le sens de l’éducation dans le monde moderne ». Bien sûr, le discours officiel dit qu’il s’agit d’instruire, de développer la personnalité de l’enfant et, avec insistance de l’éduquer à la citoyenneté. Mais dans la forme actuelle de notre démocratie, ces objectifs sont davantage le début d’un catalogue à la Prévert qu’un ensemble cohérent. Car chaque objectif pris séparément exclut pratiquement les deux autres. Comment prétendre inculquer une morale et des pratiques de citoyenneté fondées sur le respect, la solidarité et donc le partage, quand l’école repose sur l’évaluation compétitive, où s’exerce une solidarité de chacun pour soi. Même constat d’impasse pour « l’épanouissement de la personnalité », incompatible avec la course monomaniaque aux savoirs diplômants. Et comment instruire des enfants « hétérogènes » sans créer une nouvelle culture scolaire qui intègre les valeurs éducatives d’une vraie mixité sociale : mais cela suppose un nouveau regard sur les enfants candidats à l’exclusion et une formation en amont qui, pour l’instant, n’existe pas ou est tout à fait à la marge dans les IUFM ? Comme en miroir à toutes ces réformes qui tournent en rond, le débat sur l’école, au lieu de mettre au jour les racines de la crise et les contradictions qui les alimentent, s’enlise dans de complaisantes et récurrentes polémiques. Si l’on a bien compris, deux camps plus ou moins autoproclamés ferraillent depuis le milieu des années 80 : l’un défend la version républicaine et traditionnelle de l’école instruisante, qui doit s’en tenir à transmettre la culture et ses œuvres ; l’autre veut permettre la modernisation du système. Avec des dispositifs d’organisation et de méthode empruntés à la pédagogie et aux sciences de l’éducation en général. Mais ces polémiques sont d’autant plus caricaturales que ces deux camps sont en fait d’accord sur l’essentiel : agir au nom du dogme républicain de « l’égalité des chances » qu’ils ne cessent d’invoquer. Ni les uns ni les autres ne se sont aperçus que « l’égalité des chances » était cela même qui rendra à jamais impossibles les réformes égalitaires qu’ils appellent ! « L’égalité des chances » n’est qu’un pseudo-concept, obstacle majeur, aujourd’hui plus qu’hier, à tout ce qui voudrait s’énoncer comme refondation d’un système éducatif démocratique. « L’égalité des chances » n’a jamais eu pour objectif d’assurer l’égalité, mais de légitimer les inégalités sociales. Elle ne mesure jamais que l’obligation de se rapporter à une échelle sociale de réussite. La chance s’y distribue à partir de polarités dont on fait croire qu’elles sont quasiment naturelles : des voies de l’« excellence » jusqu’aux filières de la relégation pour ceux à qui on feint hypocritement de donner « une seconde chance ».	Translation - English Hard times in the teaching profession As the new Minister of Education settles into his office, one state of affairs is obvious. More and more teachers are living in a state of confusion, anxiety and desperation, in a job with no objectives, no performance indicators and no really clear directives. For decades now they have been subjected to reforms at a rate which has them chasing their tails in the name of a hypothetical and as yet unobtainable democratization of schools. We can always pretend to believe that we are coming closer to achieving it, while on the other hand seeing at the same time an increase in school exclusions, violence and other instances of rudeness, the unavoidable price to be paid for this democratization. What teacher could define, clearly and confidently, schools’ aims and tasks, or at least a minimum common ground that would point to the fact that they share the same undertaking? Edgar Pisani, a former Minister from the early days of the Fifth Republic, indicated in a recent publication that the blind spot of this Republic, the Republic which has carried out all these reforms, was “that there has never been a fundamental debate on education, when what is at stake is the direction of education in the modern world.” The official view is, of course, that it is a question of instructing, developing the child’s personality and, most of all, educating him in citizenship. But in the current form of our democracy, these objectives are more like the beginnings of a random Jacques Prévert-style list than a coherent whole since each objective, taken individually, virtually excludes the other two. How can we claim to instil a moral code and the behaviour of citizenship based on respect, solidarity and consequently sharing when the school system is based on competitive assessment whose underlying ethos is every man for himself. The same impasse applies to the “development of the personality”, which is incompatible with the single-minded race to learn what is needed to pass exams. And how can “heterogeneous” children be taught without creating a new school culture which integrates the educational values of a true social mix? But that would assume taking a new look at children who would be potential candidates for exclusion, and training at an earlier stage which at present does not exist or does so completely on the sidelines in the Instituts Universitaires de Formation des Maîtres (primary teacher training colleges). As if mirroring all these reforms going round in circles, instead of shedding light on the roots of the crisis and the contradictions which fuel them, the debate on schools is becoming bogged down in recurring, self-indulgent controversies. If our understanding is correct, two more or less self-proclaimed camps have been at loggerheads since the mid-1980s. One defends the traditional republican model of the school as a place of instruction which must confine itself to transmitting culture and its body of works. The other wants to allow the modernisation of the system, with organisational and planning mechanisms borrowed from teaching and educational science in general. But these controversies are all the more ridiculous in that these two camps are actually in agreement on the fundamental point of acting in the name of the republican belief in “equality of opportunity” to which they ceaselessly refer. Neither has noticed that it is precisely “equality of opportunity” which will make these egalitarian reforms for which they are calling forever impossible to achieve. “Equality of opportunity” is merely a pseudo-concept and a major obstacle, more so today than in the past, to everything that would like to be seen as the reshaping of a democratic educational system. The aim of “equal opportunity” has never been to ensure equality, but to legitimize social inequalities. It only ever measures the obligation to relate to a social scale of success. Opportunity is shared out from both extremes, which we are made to believe are almost natural, from the paths of “excellence” to the roads to relegation for those to whom we hypocritically pretend to give “a second chance”.

Source text - French En France, plus de 750 000 enfants naissent chaque année. Si l’école maternelle les accueille à partir de 3 ans, le problème de la garde des enfants plus jeunes reste entier. Après la guerre, la prédominance du modèle « familialiste », symbolisé par l’homme au travail et la femme au foyer, évinçait de facto tout dilemme sur ce point. L’aide publique consistait à favoriser les familles mono-actives (allocation salaire unique…). A partir des années soixante, l’irrésistible progression de l’activité féminine à plein temps (qui est une spécificité française) a mis à mal ce modèle traditionnel, soulevant ainsi la question : qui doit garder le jeune enfant ? Les discours politiques se sont orientés vers l’aide à la conciliation entre vie familiale et professionnelle. Cet « arbitrage » est encore aujourd’hui considéré comme une problématique exclusivement réservée aux femmes. Le domaine du travail est encore souvent considéré comme relevant des compétences des hommes, tandis que la sphère familiale concerne principalement les femmes, comme si coexistaient des hommes sans famille et des femmes inactives. Les pouvoirs publics ont mis en place des mesures visant à faciliter le travail des femmes et ont développé les possibilités d’accueil des jeunes enfants. Dans un premier temps, l’accent a porté sur l’offre d’équipements et services : crèches collectives, familiales, parentales, haltes-garderies. Le milieu des années quatre-vingt marque la fin de l’hégémonie de ce type de structures et le développement de modes de garde individuels : encouragement à l’emploi d’une personne à domicile (AGED, allocation de garde d’enfant à domicile), d’une assistante maternelle à l’extérieur (AFEAMA, aide à la famille pour l’emploi d’une assistante maternelle agréée) ou retrait du marché du travail d’un des deux parents (APE, allocation parentale d’éducation). Ce mouvement s’est poursuivi dans les années quatre-vingt-dix. De ce fait, la proportion d’enfants accueillis en crèche stagne, alors que l’accueil individuel concerne un nombre croissant d’enfants. Le dispositif actuel d’aide à la garde du jeune enfant comprend de multiples mesures nationales et locales. Les services offerts tentent, autant que faire se peut, de prendre en compte le développement de l’enfant. Bien qu’essentiel, l’aspect qualitatif de la garde d’enfant ne fait pas ici l’objet d’une analyse approfondie. Le système français est l’un des plus généreux d’Europe et offre aux parents une grande diversité de modes d’accueil. Cependant, il n’est pas parfait pour autant. Il ne permet pas de couvrir l’ensemble des besoins de la population. Les diverses possibilités ne sont pas accessibles à toutes les familles. De plus, la superposition successive des aides a rendu ce système complexe. Ses effets redistributifs et son impact sur l’accès à l’emploi des femmes sont mal connus. Le nouveau gouvernement propose de modifier l’intervention publique. Les modalités exactes de ces changements, encore imprécises, doivent être discutées lors de la prochaine conférence sur la famille.	Translation - English More than 750,000 children are born in France each year. Although children can attend nursery school from the age of three, the problem of care for younger children remains unresolved. After the war, the predominance of the traditional “family” model characterised by the man at work and the woman at home, effectively eliminated any dilemma on this matter. State assistance consisted of helping families with one wage-earner (with the single salary benefit etc). From the 1960s onwards, the unstoppable development of full-time female employment (which is a particularly French characteristic) undermined this traditional model, and thus raised the question of who should care for young children. Political debate has tended towards helping reconcile family and working life. This “balancing act” is, even today, considered to be exclusively the woman’s problem. The sphere of work is still often considered to be the man’s concern, while the family is principally the woman’s, as if men without children and non-working women co-existed. The authorities have put in place measures which aim to make it easier for women to work and have developed child care possibilities. Initially the emphasis was on the provision of facilities and services, such as collective child care, care by a registered childminder, mutual child care organised by parents, and day nurseries. The mid-1980s saw the end of the predominance of this type of arrangement and the development of individual methods of child care by encouraging employing someone in the home (with AGED, the allowance for employing a childminder in the home), the employment of an outside childminder (with AFEAMA, family assistance for the employment of a registered childminder) or the withdrawal from the workforce of one of the two parents (with APE, the parental education benefit). This trend continued into the 1990s and thus the proportion of children in nurseries has remained constant while the number of children in individual child care has increased. Current arrangements for the care of young children include a number of national and local measures. The services offered try, as far as possible, to take into account the child’s development. Essential as it is, the quality of child care is not the subject of in-depth analysis here. The French system is one of the most generous in Europe and offers parents a great diversity of types of child care. However, it is not perfect for all that. It does not cover all the country’s needs and the various possibilities are not accessible to all families. In addition, the system has been complicated by an accumulation of new benefits whose redistributive effects and impact on making work accessible to women are largely unknown. The new government proposes changing state intervention but the precise terms of these changes are still vague and are to be dealt with in the next conference on the family.

Il faut cerner pourquoi les clients ne cessent de croître, quelles sont leurs motivations de fréquentation, quels sont leurs profils ? Désormais, il existe de nombreuses études quantitatives et qualitatives permettant d'isoler les huit facteurs de succès du hard discount et en même temps de comprendre pourquoi et où son succès fut moindre. • Regagner le contrôle de ses dépenses Tous les clients des hypermarchés le savent bien : on en sort toujours en ayant acheté bien plus que ce que l'on s'était fixé en y entrant. Cette situation qui fait la richesse des hypermarchés fait la détresse des ménages de chômeurs, ou des ménages surendettés ou des retraités ou même de tout un chacun. Pour en sortir, if faut donc ne plus entrer dans un hypermarché, mais dans un magasin qui ne propose qu'un produit par unité de besoin. Ce que veulent les clients du hard discount ce n'est pas acheter les produits les moins chers, mais réduire leur facture globale des courses : recontrôler leurs dépenses. § Regagner du pouvoir d'achat Le besoin de regagner du pouvoir d'achat à tous prix a été exacerbé par le sentiment que le passage à l'euro fut l'occasion de réajustements de tous les prix à la hausse menés par la grande distribution. Il est vrai que tout un pays changeant de monnaie d'un jour à l'autre, les repères de ce qui était cher ou non ont été bousculés. Ceci a contribué à faire perdre aux hypermarchés leur image de discounter, de prix bas. • L'image prix des hypermarchés s'est dégradée En France, les hypermarchés ont fait de leur marque-enseigne une arme de bataille et surtout de rentabilité. Pour contrebalancer l'attractivité intrinsèque des grandes marques, leur « privilège de demande » pour reprendre l'expression d'O. Géradon de Véra, ils ont accentué la part de marché de la marque-enseigne par « pression de l'offre » : mises en avant, part de linéaire, et surtout écart de prix, Mais, pour accroître leur pression sur le client, plutôt que diminuer les prix de la marque enseigne, ils ont plutôt accentué l'écart avec les grandes marques en augmentant le prix de celles-ci. Or, ce sont elles qui fixent les repères du niveau de prix d'un magasin aux yeux des clients. De plus l'évolution de la décoration intérieure des hypermarchés tels Auchan ou Carrefour n'a pu que renforcer ce sentiment. • La loi sur les trente-cinq heures On dispose désormais d'un certain recul pour apprécier l'impact de cette loi sur les comportements. Il apparaît que les consommateurs ne veulent profiter de leur gain de temps pour faire plus de choses, mais pour faire les choses dans le calme, d'une façon plus sereine. What customers of hard discount stores want is not to buy the cheapest products, but to reduce their total shopping bill and regain control of their expenditure. - Regaining purchasing power The need to regain purchasing power at all price levels has been intensified by the feeling that the transition to the euro was an opportunity for all prices to be increased, led by the large supermarket chains. It is true that when a whole country changes currency overnight, the benchmarks for what is expensive or not are shaken up. This has been a contributory factor in hypermarkets losing their image of discounting and low prices. - Hypermarkets’ price image has been damaged In France, hypermarkets have made their own brand into a weapon, particularly of profitability. In order to counterbalance the inherent attractiveness of the big brand names, their “demand advantage”, to use Olivier Géradon de Véra’s phrase, they have highlighted their own-brand share of the market by offer pressure” through promotions, share of shelf-space and above all price differentials. But, in order to increase their pressure on the customer, rather than lower the price of their own brand, they have highlighted the differential by increasing the price of the brand names. Now, it is the latter which fix the benchmark of a shop’s price level in the customers’ eyes. What’s more, the way in which the interior decoration of hypermarkets such as Auchan and Carrefour has evolved can only have reinforced this feeling. - The thirty-five hour week law We can now stand back and assess the impact this law has had on behaviour. It seems that consumers do not want to use their extra time to do more, but to do things in a more calm and composed way.

After teaching French at secondary school level for over 25 years, I decided in 2009 that it was time for a change and left teaching to pursue a career in translating.

My other interests are reading (almost anything, in French or English, including children's fiction), knitting, birdwatching and walking.

I entered the John Dryden Translation Competition, run by the British Comparative Literature Association, in 2012 and received a letter of commendation from the judges for my translation of part of Marie-Hélène Lafon's novel L'annonce (see http://www.bcla.org/tcresult.htm)
