Take a look at how latest technology has changed the advertising landscape and how to get through to today’s savvy consumers.

Do you suspect that DVRs are keeping most people from seeing your ads on TV? Are you convinced that radio is losing its listeners to the iPod? Do you wonder if the newspaper readers of yesterday are getting their news from the internet today?
It’s no secret that advertising isn’t working as well as it once did. But media fragmentation isn’t the problem. In truth, only 11.7 percent of U.S. households are equipped with a DVR, but response to TV ads is off by far more than 11.7 percent. Broadcast radio has only lost about 4 percent of its audience over the past three years, and even the most aggressive doomsayers are predicting that radio will lose no more than 11 percent of its audience by the year 2012. But response to radio ads is off by far more than that. Newspaper readership peaked in 1984, and today’s number is only about 16 percent below that banner year. But the response to newspaper ads isn’t nearly what it was back then.
We've entered the age of stimuli bombardment, visual saturation, sound bites and microscopic attention spans. The number of images and voices shouting for our attention has accelerated beyond critical mass, and the resulting explosion has fragmented the public mind. In a nutshell, we’ve developed mental filters to guard against hypercommunication.
I’m paid according to how much my clients’ sales grow, so I needed to figure out what the problem was--and then fix it. Here’s what I discovered, tested and proved:
1. Internet browsing has trained the public to more quickly disregard empty words.
2. Message relevance has become more important than repetition. (Keep in mind that I did not say repetition no longer matters.)
Bottom line: Meaningful messages are working better than ever, especially when the fundamental premise of your ad is clearly stated in the opening line. Ads full of unsupported claims and overworked “image building” phrases are rejected quicker today than ever before.
You and I spend about a minute a day sorting the mail, right? Up until a few years ago, these six minutes each week were our only exercise in high-speed content evaluation. Now we’re spending at least six hours a week scanning search engine results, web pages and e-mail for relevant, meaningful information. These hours of practice are teaching us--and our customers--to more quickly recognize and disregard empty words.
The buying public is still out there. What’s gone is their willingness to pay attention to drivel.
Ads are failing today what would have once produced good results just a few years ago. Other ads are working far better than expected. Fortunately, there’s a pattern – and things you can do to ensure your ads get noticed:
1. Talk about things your customer actually finds interesting.
2. Write your ads in a style that rings true.
3. Avoid heroic chest thumping, such as “We are the number-one…”
4. Close the loopholes in your ads--ambiguous claims make you seem dishonest.
5. Use specifics. They’re more believable than generalities.
6. Remember that substance is more important than style.
7. Relate to the customer on their own terms.
If your ad delivers a meaningful message that rings true from the moment of contact, you’ll find that it works regardless of which media you choose to deliver it.
The new rule is to say what you've got to say, and say it clean. The opening line of your ad is its most important element, so open big. I'm not talking about hype--something of the "Save up to 75 percent off this week only at blah blah blah" variety. I'm talking about making a statement that’s fundamentally more interesting than what had been in your customer's mind.

Befürchten Sie, dass digitale Videorekorder die Menschen davon abhalten, Ihre Werbclips im Fernsehen zu sehen? Sind Sie überzeugt, dass das Radio seine Höher an den iPod verliert? Oder dass die Zeitungsleser von gestern heute ihre Nachrichtern aus dem Internet beziehen?
Es ist absolut kein Geheimnis, dass Werbung nicht mehr so gut funktioniert wie früher. Aber die Aufsplitterung der Medien ist nicht das Problem. In Wahrheit sind nur 11,7 Prozent der U.S. amerikanischen Haushalte mit einem digitalen Videorekorder ausgestattet. Aber die Resonanz auf TV-Werbung ist um weit mehr als 11,7 Prozent gesunken. Radiofunk hat in den letzten drei Jahren nur ca. vier Prozent seiner Zuhörerschaft verloren und sogar die aggressivsten Schwarzseher sagen voraus, dass das Radio bis zum Jahr 2012 nicht mehr als elf Prozent seiner Zuhörerschaft verlieren wird. Aber die Resonanz auf Werbung im Radio ist schon jetzt um viel mehr als das gesunken. Die Anzahl der Zeitungsleser hatte 1984 seinen Höhepunkt und die heutige Leserzahl ist nur ca. 16 Prozent unterhalb dieses Vorzeigejahrs. Die Resonanz auf Zeitungswerbeanzeigen hingegen ist nicht einmal annähernd das, was es damals war.
Wir sind in das Zeitalter der Stimuli-Bombardierung, der visuellen Sättigung, des Häppchenjournalismus und der geradezu mikroskopischen Aufmerksamkeitsspannen eingetreten. Die Anzahl der Bilder und Stimmen, die nach unserer Aufmerksamkeit lechzen, haben über die kritische Masse hinaus zugenommen, und die daraus resultierende Explosion hat das öffentliche Bewusstsein zersplittert. Kurz und bündig, wir haben mentale Filter entwickelt um uns vor Hyperkommunikation zu schützen.
Ich werde danach bezahlt, um wie viel der Absatz meiner Kunden ansteigt. Daher musste ich herausfinden wo das Problem liegt – und es dann beheben. Hier zeige ich Ihnen was ich entdeckt, getestet und bewiesen habe:
1. Die Internetsuche hat die Öffentlichkeit geschult, leere Worte viel schneller als gegenstandslos zu betrachten.
2. Die Bedeutung der Botschaft ist wichtiger geworden als die Wiederholung. (Aber Achtung, dies bedeutet nicht, dass Wiederholung nicht mehr länger relevant ist.)
Unter dem Strich: Aussagekräftige Botschaften funktionieren besser als jemals zuvor, insbesondere wenn die wesentliche Prämisse Ihrer Anzeige deutlich im Eröffnungssatz hervorgebracht wird. Anzeigen, die voll von ungestützen Behauptungen und von „das Image aufbauenden“ Formulierungen sind, die den Anschein erwecken, man hätte ich zu sehr angestrengt, werden heute schneller als je zuvor verschmäht.
Sie und ich verbringen ungefähr eine Minute täglich damit, die Post zu sortieren, richtig? Noch vor ein paar wenigen Jahren, waren diese sechs Minuten pro Woche unsere einzige Übung einer high-speed Inhaltsbewertung. Jetzt verbringen wir mindestens sechs Stunden pro Woche damit, Suchmaschinenresultate, Internetseiten und Emails nach relevanten, vielsagenden Informationen zu überprüfen. Diese Übungsstunden lehren uns – und unsere Kunden –, inhaltslose Worte schneller zu erkennen und als gegenstandslos zu betrachten.
Die Käuferschaft ist aber immer noch da draußen. Was verschwunden ist, ist ihre Bereitschaft, jeglichem Gefasel Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken.
Werbeanzeigen scheitern heutzutage an dem, was vor nur ein paar Jahren gute Resultate hervorgebracht hätte. Andere Anzeigen wiederum funktionieren viel besser als erwartet. Zum Glück gibt es ein Verhaltensmuster – und Dinge, die man tun kann um sicher zu gehen, dass der eigenen Werbung Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird:
1. Sprechen Sie über Dinge für die sich Ihr Kunde tatsächlich interessiert.
2. Verfassen Sie Ihre Anzeigen in einer Art und Weise, die glaubhaft klingt.
3. Vermeiden Sie es, sich heldenhaft auf die Brust zu klopfen, wie z.B. „Wir sind die Nummer Eins...“.
4. Schließen Sie die Schlupflöcher in Ihren Anzeigen – doppelbödige Behauptungen lassen Sie unehrlich erscheinen.
5. Gehen Sie ins Spezifische. Das ist glaubhafter als Verallgemeinerungen.
6. Bedenken Sie, dass der Inhalt wichtiger ist als die Gestaltung.
7. Bauen Sie mit dem Kunden eine Beziehung zu dessen eigenen Bedingungen auf.
Falls ihre Werbung eine ausdrucksstarke Botschaft vermittelt, die vom ersten Moment des Kontakts an glaubhaft klingt, werden Sie sehen, dass es funktioniert, egal welches Medium Sie zur Übermittlung ihrer Werbebotschaft wählen.
Die neue Regel ist es, zu sagen, was man zu sagen hat – und sagen Sie es authentisch. Der Eröffnungssatz ihrer Werbung ist das wichtigste Element, also machen Sie damit etwas her. Ich spreche hierbei nicht von Tamtam – etwa in der Art von „Sparen Sie diese Woche bis zu 75 Prozent nur bei...“. Ich spreche hier davon, eine Aussage zu machen, die grundlegend interessanter ist, als das, was ihr Kunde erwartet hat.
