English to Chinese: How the use of metaphor can explain our conception of reality General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English The work of this thesis is focused on linguistics, in particular on the new concept of metaphor promoted by Lakoff and Johnson. Since the publication of Metaphors we live by in 1980, metaphor is no longer merely a question of words: "it organizes our perceptions; it settles how we deal with human affairs and how we handle our interpersonal relationships."
The main part of my thesis consists of the three Chinese theses in linguistics that I have translated into Italian. The first is about the development of George Lakoff's linguistic theories, from enthusiastic supporter of Standard theory to initiator of generative semantics, to cognitive semantics; the second thesis is about the theories on metaphor developed by Lakoff in collaboration with the philosopher Mark Johnson; the third is about the relationship between polisemy and prototype theory.
In the first chapter of my thesis I give an introduction about the history of metaphor and the studies and theories about metaphor; in the second chapter I give a presentation of polisemy, prototypic categories and the theory of family resemblance; in the third I present linguistics in general and I introduce the linguists, the philosophers and their theories mentioned in the translation. In the fourth chapter you can find the three theses I translated and in the final chapter I explain the problems I had during the translation.
Since the theses I translated are all about very specific topics, the main problems I met were about understanding the theories explained by the authors and the lexicon employed. Another big challenge has been the translation of metaphors referring to popular Chinese songs and to characters of the Chinese theatre opera Shajiabang.
Translation - Chinese 这篇论文的主题是语言学,特别聚焦于Lakoff和Johnson推出的隐新观念。自从1980 Metaphors we live by的出版以来,隐喻不再单纯是字词的问题；隐喻是“组织我们的感知、决定我们怎样处理世事、怎样处理与他人之间的关系”。
我的论文的最重要部分是我翻译了三篇中文论文到意大利语。第一篇讲的是George Lakoff 语言理论的发展历程:从对转换生成语法的热心支持到提出生成语义学,最后发展到认知语义学。 第二篇讲的是他跟哲学家Mark Johnson 推出的隐喻理论,第三篇是关于词多义和原型范畴理论的关系。
在我的论文的第一章我介绍了隐喻的历史,关于隐喻的研究和理论；在第二章我讲了关于词多义,原型范畴和家族相似性的理论；在第三章我介绍了语言学,然后介绍了在我翻译的论文中提及的语言学家,哲学家和他们的理论。 第四章就是我翻译的三篇论文,第五章是我在翻译的过程中碰到的问题。
因为我翻译的论文论述的都是很专业的题目,所以我遇到的最大的翻译问题是如何理解作者论述的理论和他使用的语言。另外一个挑战是把文中一些提到的中文歌曲和京剧《沙家浜》里的两个人物翻译成意大利语
