English to Bulgarian: Lymph nodes General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Source text - English Lymph is a clear fluid which passes through nodes which then filter out any infection or other debris. The lymph is then circulated back into the blood stream. Cancer cells move through the lymphatic system to the nearest lymph nodes. For the breast these lymph nodes are either located in the arm pit (axilla) or between the ribs.
The most common place to find secondary spread from a cancer in the breast is the lymph nodes under the arm. For this reason it is usual for some, or all, of the nodes to be removed during breast surgery.
Usually a small number of nodes are removed (this is called sentinel node biopsy or axillary node sampling). These procedures remove nodes for testing in the laboratory. If cancer cells are found then a further procedure is needed to remove the rest of the nodes.
In some hospitals/centres, if there is evidence of spread of cancer cells to the axillary nodes, further treatment with radiotherapy may be given rather than more surgery to clear the nodes.
These two procedures have very similar results and the surgeon and breast care nurse will explain which is the most appropriate.
