Chaque année, l'hebdomadaire The Economist dresse la liste des différents prix du Big Mac dans les principales zones géographiques.
L’une des difficultés majeures de l’établissement des PPA est le choix du panier de produits permettant les comparaisons internationales. Les mesures de PPA, réalisées par les organismes internationaux comprennent souvent des milliers de produits et leur composition est dépendante de chacune des zones géographiques étudiées.
L’indice Big Mac présente plusieurs avantages: sa mesure est facile; La composition et la vente d’un Big Mac nécessite comme intrants à la fois des matières premières (achetées sur les marchés locaux), des services (cuisiniers, vendeurs) et des locaux. Les coûts de productions sont calculés au plus juste par les gérants des McDonald's et les prix de ventes sont fixés nationalement par la firme.
L'indice Big Mac en tant qu'outil de calcul du pouvoir d'achat possède des limites au sens ou il prend en compte l'interaction des monnaies de différent pays. Every year the weekly Economist draws up a list of the different Big Mac prices in major geographical areas.

While countries have different levels of development, the homogeneity of the Big Mac is applied only and with difficulty to a homogenous group of countries. Moreover, governments in every country have developed trade barriers to protect local markets, in spite of intervention from a body such as the World Trade Organization. Finally, consumer taste varies between countries, which makes the level of demand for goods fluctuate.

IHRL is part of an international legal system that governs relations between nations. The latter is composed of agreements reached between nations, called treaties or conventions, and international custom, which is composed of the practices of nations recognized by them as mandatory, as well as general principles law.
IHRL only applies in situations of armed conflict. It does not determine whether or not one nation has recourse to force. This question is decided by an important but distinct part of international law contained in the Charter of the United Nations.
International human rights law is an ancient form of law. The origins of current human rights regulations, such as the Geneva Convention, go back to the work of Henri Dunant. Biosphere and biodiversity are inseparable characteristics of planet Earth. The biosphere is defined as the sphere of life, while biodiversity is the diversity of it. The sphere is the container, while diversity is the contents. This diversity is expressed both on an ecological level (ecosystem), a population level (intraspecific diversity) and a species level (specific diversity).

François de La Rochefoucauld, écrivain du XVIIe siècle, fut surtout un moraliste. Le portrait que vous allez lire est adapté de ses Mémoires. Il est aussi connu pour son livre intitulé Maximes.
Francis Ponge est un poète contemporain dont le livre le plus connu s’intitule Le Parti pris des choses. Ponge y décrit, dans de brefs poèmes en prose, les choses de notre monde regardées chacune séparément et pour elles-mêmes.
1. Portrait d’après La Rochefoucauld
Je suis de taille moyenne et bien proportionnée. J’ai le teint brun, mais assez uni ; le front haut et d’une grandeur raisonnable ; les yeux noirs, petits et enfoncés et les sourcils noirs et épais, mais bien formés. Il m’est difficile de dire comment est mon nez car il n’est ni plat ni courbé, ni gros ni pointu. Tout ce que je sais, c’est qu’il est plutôt grand que petit, et qu’il descend un peu trop en bas. J’ai la bouche grande et les lèvres assez rouges d’ordinaire, ni bien ni mal formées. J’ai les dents blanches et assez bien rangées. On m’a dit que j’avais un peu trop de menton : je viens de me regarder dans le miroir pour vérifier et je ne sais pas trop bien qu’en juger. Il me serait difficile de dire si j’ai le visage ou carré ou ovale. J’ai les cheveux noirs, naturellement frisés, et avec cela assez épais et assez longs pour avoir une belle tête. J’ai quelque chose de triste et de fier dans la mine : cela fait croire aux gens que je suis méprisant, quoique je ne le sois pas du tout. J’ai l’action facile, et même un peu trop et je fais beaucoup de gestes en parlant. Voilà naïvement comme je pense que je suis fait au dehors ; et l’on trouvera, je crois, que ce que je pense de moi n’est pas très loin de la réalité.

II. Structures
Comment travailler
Dans chaque chapitre nous allons étudier progressivement quelques structures grammaticales illustrées dans vos texts : forms et usages des verbs, pronoms, différents types de phrases, ordre des mots, et ainsi de suite. Avant de faire les exercises, lisez les explications dans Hoffmann comme suggéré (nous donnons les numéros des pages et des paragraphes à étudier). Il est important que vous appreniez à vous servir de votre Hoffmann comme d’un instrument de référence, c’est-à-dire, que vous preniez l’habitude de consulter Hoffmann comme vous consultez un dictionnaire.
A. Le passif. Voir Hoffmann [15] A, B et C, pp. 38–40.
Complétez en mettant les verbs à la forme passive (présent).
Le pain (composer) se compose de farine, d’eau et de sel.
D’abord la pâte (pétrir) pétrit dans le pétrin.
Ensuite la fermentation (produire) se produit par les ferments qui (introduire) s’introduisent pendant le pétrissage.
Finalement la cuisson (faire) se fait dans un four.
Mettez les verbs aux temps indiqués.

1. à cause de/parce que
Tous les deux expriment la causalité et sont donc synonymes, mais ils ont des emplois différents :
A cause de un nom.
Parce que une proposition.
Exemples :

Je n’aime pas ce pain parce que sa croûte est trop dure.
Complétez par à cause de ou parce que :
La surface du pain est merveilleuse à cause de l’impression qu’elle donne.

Il arrête de parler parce qu’il veut manger.

2. L’expression avoir lieu veut dire « to take place ».
Faites des transformations de temps de la phrase suivante :

3. Venir de infinitif. Voir Hoffmann [8] B-4, p. 19, et « Pour traduire », p. 4.Vérifiez aussi les formes du verbe.

Comment travailler
Vous avez jusqu’à présent appris un certain nombre d’éléments de vocabulaire et de grammaire liés aux textes et aux thèmes de ce chapitre. Avant de passer à l’analyse détaillée des textes et à la production de vox propres textes, RELISEZ les textes 1, 2 et 3 ci-dessus.
A. Questions sur les textes
Répondez aux questions par des phrases complètes et cohérentes. Utilisez le plus possible le vocabulaire de cette leçon.
La Rochefoucauld
Quels sont les traits le plus frappants du visage de La Rochefoucauld ? Ses cheveux sont longs et épais. Ses lèvres sont assez rouges. De sa physionomie ? Elle parait méprisante au monde.
De quels traits semble-t-il content ? Il est content de ses cheveux, de ses dents, de sont front et de ses sourcils. Mécontent ? Il est mécontent de son menton et de sa mine.
Que savez-vous sur le caractère de La Rochefoucauld après avoir lu son portrait physique ? C’est un homme fier et aisé; son visage ne révèle pas forcément ce qu’il pense.
Est-il modeste ou fier ? Il est assez fier.
D’après ce portrait, quel genre de personne est La Rochefoucauld ? C’est un homme.
Pain
Quels sont les ingrédients principaux du pain ? Ce sont : la farine, le sel, l’eau et la levure.
Quelles sont les étapes de la fabrication du pain ? Le pétrissage, la fermentation, la cuisson.
Qu’est-ce qui distingue les différentes sortes de pâte ? La quantité d’eau les distinguent.
Qu’est-ce qui produit la fermentation ? Les ferments dans la levure la produisent.
« Le pain » de Ponge
A quoi Ponge compare-t-il la surface du pain ? Il la compare a la terre; aux vallées et aux montagnes. Y a-t-il d’autres images pareilles dans le poème ? On trouve encore une fois des images de la nature--les fleurs, la lumière, le feu.
Comment le pain était-il avant d’être cuit ? Le pain est une masse amorphe et éructante. Que s’est-il passé au moment de la cuisson ? Le pain s’endurcit. Pourquoi Ponge qualifie-t-il le four par l’adjectif « stellaire » ? S’il compare le pain à la surface de la terre, ça veut dire que le four joue le rôle du soleil qui réchauffe la terre.
Avec quoi la dureté de la surface du pain fait-elle contraste ? Elle fait contraste avec l’intérieur (la mie). Quelle partie du pain est désignée par « la mollesse sous-jacente » ? La mie est désignée par ce terme. Pourquoi est-elle qualifiée par l’adjectif « ignoble » ? Parce qu’elle n’est pas appétissante.
Quels autres adjectifs Ponge emploie-t-il pour la mie ? Il emploie « lâche. » A quoi la compare-t-il ? Il le compare à une éponge.
Faites une liste de tous les noms dans le texte qui se réfèrent à la croûte du pain ; à la mie. La croûte du pain : les vallées, les crêtes, les ondulations. La mie : l’éponge, les feuilles, les fleurs, etc. Faites également une liste de tous les adjectifs qui décrivent la pâte, la croûte et la mie. La pâte: amorphe, éructant. La croûte: articulée, ondulante, pleine de crevasses. La mie: ignoble, lâche.
Quel est le double sens de « brisons-là » ? Ça veut dire « faire un petit congé » et en même temps ça veut dire « brisons le pain. »
Le pain est-il pour le poète objet de respect ? Non, c’est un objet d’alimentation.
Quelles sont les principales différences entre la description du pain dans le dictionnaire et celle dans le poème de Ponge ? La description de Ponge est inventive alors que celle du dictionnaire est technique.
B. Descriptions
Pour chacun des éléments suivants faites une description précise (une phrase ou deux selon ce que vous avez à dire). Utilisez le plus d’adjectifs possible. Faites si vous voulez des comparaisons. Laissez courir votre imagination.
Décrivez :
le nez de La Rochefoucauld—le nez est bien proportionné.
les cheveux de La Rochefoucauld—les cheveux sont luxe.
le visage de votre meilleur/e ami/e—le visage de ma meilleure ami est affectueux.

C. Production
Ecrivez une page (environ 150 mots) sur chaque sujet ci-dissous.
Faites votre portrait en suivant le modèle du texte de La Rochefoucauld.
Je suis de taille moyenne et assez mince. J’ai le teint pâle avec les joues roses, et les yeux à la fois bleus et verts, dans la forme des amandes. Mes sourcils sont maigres, noirs et courbés. J’ai des paupières longues. Mon nez est assez rond; on m’a dit que ça ressemble à un saut à ski, ce que je n’aime pas trop. En été il y a des taches de rousseur auprès de mon nez. J’ai des lèvres épaisses et rouges dont les coins se lèvent naturellement, sauf quand je pense aux choses sérieuses; dans ce cas, mes lèvres s’arrangent en ligne droite et ferme. Surtout, j’ai quelque chose de badin dans la mine, même quand j’ai l’air sérieux, ce qui fait croire aux gens que j'expérimente quelque ma propre blague privée. J’ai les cheveux épais, assez longs et luisants, dont la couleur est rousse et même un peu dorée quand le soleil les touche. J’ai l’action compassée, et on m’a dit que mes mouvements son saccadés, comme une marionette. Voila naïvement comme je pense que je semble aux gens qui m’observent.
Ecrivez une description poétique de la pomme de terre en suivant le modèle de Ponge. A quoi pourriez-vous comparer une pomme de terre crue ? Une pomme de terre cuite ? Quelles comparaisons évoqueraient la différence de textures ? Quelles formes la pomme de terre peut-elle prendre (pensez aux pommes de terres crues et aussi à la purée, aux pommes de terre bouillies, aux frites, aux gratins, etc...) ?
La surface d’une pomme de terre crue pourrait se comparer à la surface de notre terre. Sa surface n’est pas égale; il y a des petites collines et des declivités; parfois il y a même des cratères, comme à la surface de la lune. Après qu’elle s’épluche et se lave, il n’y a plus de surface rêche, mais plutôt une surface pâle et glissante. Après être cuite au four, elle devient, molle, et embuée. D’un autre coté, les pommes de terres purées sont lisses et crémeuses; les pommes de terre bouillies sont granuleuses avec la peau douce qui s’épluche très facilement. Les frîtes sont grasses et salées.

Francois de la Rochefoucauld, a writer of the 17th century, was above all a moralist. The description that you are going to read is adapted from his Memoires. He is also known for his book entitled Maximes.
Francis Ponge is a contemporary poet whose best known book is entitled The Voice of Things. Therein Ponge describes, in brief poems in prose, the things of our world, each seen separately and for itself.
Description of La Rochefoucauld--by him
I am an average height and well-proportioned. I have a dark but rather plain complexion; a high, reasonably-sized forehead; black eyes, small and deep-set, and black eyebrows that are thick but well-formed. It is difficult to describe the appearance of my nose because it is neither straight nor curved, neither fat nor sharp. All I know is that it is bigger rather than smaller. I have a large mouth and rather red, ordinary lips, neither well nor poorly formed. I have white and fairly orderly teeth. I have been told that my chin is a little too prominent. I just looked at myself in the mirror to check and I am not a very good judge of that. It would be difficult to say if my face is square or oval. I have black, naturally curly hair that is thick and long enough to make for an attractive head. There is something sad and proud in my facial expression, which makes people believe that I am contemptuous, even though I am not at all so. My physical actions are easy and fluid, perhaps even a little too much so, and I make lots of gestures while speaking. Here is how I naively think that I appear on the outside; and you will find, I believe, that what I think of myself is not very far from reality.

Food made from flour mixed with water and salt, kneaded, leavened and baked in the oven; wheat bread, rye bread, barley bread. Making bread has three stages: kneading, leavening and baking.
Kneading, which is accomplished in a dough trough, leads to the formation of the dough by working together flour, water, salt and yeast. There are three distinct kinds of dough: fresh dough, which contains 65 % water and is used to make fancy bread; regular dough, which is the most widely used, with 60 % water.
The leavening of the dough results from the activity of enzymes introduced during the previous operation (sourdough starter or yeast). Fermentation starts in the dough trough and goes into the baskets where the dough is distributed.
Cooking takes place in an oven.

The surface of the bread is wonderful first of all because of the quasi-panoramic impression it gives: as if we had on hand at our disposal the Alps, the Taurus (1) or the Andes (2).
Thus was an amorphous, belching mass (3) slipped into the stellar oven for us, where, hardening, it is hewn into valleys, ridges, undulations, cracks ... And from that moment, these designs become so clear, and these thin slabs (4 ) where light, when it shines lays down its fire, without a care for the revolting, soft underlying base (5).
This cowardly and cold basement known as the soft interior of bread has a sponge-like consistency: leaves or flowers are found there like Siamese twins joined together by both elbows at once When the bread goes stale (7) the flowers wither and shrink: they break away from each other, and become a friable, crumbling mass.
But let us break here: For the bread in our mouths must be less an object of respect than an object of consumption.

What are the most striking traits of La Rochefoucauld’s face? Of his facial appearance? His hair is long and thick. He lips are fairly red. His facial expression appears contemptuous on the surface.
With which traits does he seem content? Discontent? He is content with his hair, his teeth, his forehead and his eyebrows.
What do you know about La Rochefoucauld’s character after having read his physical description? He is a proud but easygoing man.
Is he modest or proud? He is proud.
According to his description, what gender is La Rochefoucauld? He is male.
« Bread » by Ponge
To what does Ponge compare the surface of bread ? Are there other similar images in the poem ? He compares it to the earth; to valleys and mountains. Again we find images of nature--flowers, light, fire.
What was the bread like before being baked? The bread is an amorphous, belching mass. What happened when it was baked? The bread hardens. Why did Ponge describe the oven as “stellar”? If he compares the bread to the earth’s surface, that means that the oven plays the role of the sun that warms the earth.
What what is the hardness of the bread’s surface contrast? He contrasts it with the soft interior. Which part of the bread is designated by « the underlying softness »? The soft interior is designed by this term. Why is the softness described by the adjective “revolting”? Because it is not appetizing.
What other adjectives does Ponge use for the interior of bread? He uses “cowardly.” To what does he compare it? He compares it to a sponge.
Make a liste of all the nouns in the text that refer to a crust of bread; to the interior. Make also a list of all the adjectives that describe the dough, the crust and the interior. Dough: amorphous, belching. Crust: well-defined, rippling, full of cracks. The soft interior: disgusting, cowardly.
What is the double meaning of « brisons-la » ? It means “to take a bread” and also “to break the bread.”
Is bread an object of respect for him? No, it is an object of nourishment.
What are the main differences between the dictionary description of bread and that in Ponge’s poem. Ponge’s description is imaginative while the dictionary definition is technical.

I am an average height and rather thin. I have a pale complexion with red cheeks, and almond-shaped eyes that are at once blue and green. My eyebrows are thin, black and curved. I have long eyelashes. My nose is round; I have been told that it looks like a ski jump, which I don’t like very much. In the summer there are freckles around my nose. I have thick red lips that are naturally turned up at the edges, except when I am thinking of something serious; in that case, my lips are set in a firm, straight line. Over all, there is something playful about my facial expression, even when I have a serious air about me, which makes people believe that I am experiencing my own private joke. I have thick, rather long and shiny hair; the color is reddish and even a little bit golden when the light touches it. My body language is stiff, like a marionette. That is naively how I think I seem to outside observers.
Write a poetic description of a potato by following Ponge’s model.
To what could you compare a raw potato? A cooked potato? What comparisons would evoke the difference between textures? What forms could the potato take (think of raw potatoes et also of mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes, French fries, cheesy potatoes, etc…)?
The surface of a raw potato could be compared to the earth’s surface. Its surface is not even; there are small hills and dips; sometimes, there are even craters, like on the surface of the moon. After a potato is peeled and washed, it no longer has a rough surface but a white, slippery surface. After being baked, it becomes soft and steamy. On the other hand, mashed potatoes are smooth and creamy; boiled potatoes are mealy with skin that peels off easily. French fries are greasy and salty.
Written Assignment 1
Write out vocabulary exercises H, I, and J (in Section I) as preparation for the descriptive writing in this chapter.
Reread each of the three passages and write the answers to the questions in Section III, A. (Note that a translation of “Le pain” by Ponge can be found in the Appendix.)

Francoise Mallet-Joris is a novelist whose novels, news articles, essays and songs are well known in the French world. The Paper House (1970) is a biographical novel of his family life.
The saga of Daniel
When Daniel was born, I was 18 years old. I bought several specialized goods: collapsible bathtub, bottle warmer with thermostat, bottle sterilizer. I never knew how to use them very well. The bathtub, maybe, but the bottle sterilizer! He was none the worse for it. (1) I sometimes brought him in cafes; people looked at him with surprise: that was not fashionable yet. He was a pioneer baby, a forerunner hippie baby. (2) When I would go dancing, he would in the coatroom, curled up in the middle of the coats. We liked each other with a subtle surprise towards the capricious fate that had bound us to each other.
At the age of five he showed a precocious protective instinct by shouting in the metro in a very shrill voice: “Let my mommy through.” At the age of eight, he did “his” shopping and had “his” dinner all alone, when he supposed I was coming back too late in the evening. He already surpassed me completely. At the age of nine, we had a few conflicts. He refused to go to school, to wash and to eat fish. One day I plunged him fully clothed into the bath, another day Jacques gave him a piggyback to school: he howled the entire way. These child-rearing attempts were never successful. As for the rest, he mended his ways. We decided not to intervene anymore.
At the age of ten, having been assigned as an essay (4) topic in middle school “a happy memory,” he cleverly wrote: “The happiest memory of my life is my parents’ marriage.
At the age of 15 went through a rock’n’roll (5) phase. We collected 45 records (6). At the age of sixteen he showed a lively interest in the fairer sex. He played the clarinet. He drank some.
At the age of 17, he became a Buddhist.
He played the tuba. He grew his hair out.
At the age of 18, he sat for his baccalaureate exam. Shortly before that, he had been decked out in jewelry like a Hindu prince or an understudy, a ring on each finger. I waited in silence, dumbfounded and curious, as if watching the growth of a plant, the metamorphosis of a caterpillar.
The jewelry disappeared. He played the saxophone and the guitar. He hitchhiked 4000 kilometers, got to know the desert tribes in Mauritania, choked on the dust. He noted that Dakar looked surprisingly like Knokke-le-Zoute (Belgium).
He came back with practically no shoes (his own having melted in the heat of the desert) but endowed with great prestige in the eyes of his brothers and sisters. He shaved his head and studied economics. That’s the saga of Daniel. In all that, where is the upbringing? If Daniel, who will become legally of age, is a good son, a handsome boy, gifted with humor and seriousness, with imagination and common sense, what am I here for? Oh, nothing, nothing, and yet something, a very small small thing, perhaps the only thing that I have given him, the only, I proudly tell myself, that mattered: Confidence.
Which doesn’t mean that all the problems are solved. Daniel just bought a monkey.

Find references to Daniel’s father and to his siblings. Do they play an important role in this saga? Explain. They don’t play a big role, except for when Daniel comes back from Mauritania and they admire him a lot.

C. Essay

When I was born, Daniel was three years old. Me mother told me that every night he would help her give me a bottle and that he liked to hold me and read me fairy tales. Connaissant la personnalité de Raël comme prophète, ce dernier n’a pas compris les principes qui régissent l’univers ni l’ordre du vivant pour assurer notre survie. Au contraire, il a tout fait pour nous éloigner, nous du MADÉ, de la communauté raëlienne.

Translation - English Analysis of the book The Era of the Zodiac by Jean Sendy
An individual must attempt to flourish according to his aspirations and his tastes without worrying about what others think, insofar as he does not hurt others.
If you want to have a sensual or sexual experience with one or more individuals regardless of their sex, you can act according to your wishes, insofar as these individuals agree.
Already experts are trying to finalize techniques that can measure raw intelligence; follow their advice and make sure that the most precious of humanity, gifted children, receive an education at the level of their high intelligence.
Those who think, as most Eastern religions teach that “God” is the Infinite, are right, insofar as it is a matter of an idea in their mind that lacks identity, aware neither of our own existence nor of anything else for that matter.
Those for whom “God” is one of our creators, the Elohim, are not wrong either, insofar as they don’t make of them beings that must be worshipped on bended knee or lying prostrate, but rather our elder brothers from the Infinite, who ought to be loved as we will wish to be loved by those whom we will one day create.
What can be measured is that which one perceives from the universe, whether it is in space or in time. Everything is eternal, either in the form of matter or in the form of energy, and we ourselves are made of eternal matter.
In the understanding of the Infinite in time, it is exactly the same thing. The scientists of this mini-world could measure the age of their universe by measuring the age of the molecule of which their planet would be the atom of an atom, and the universe would be this age; then they would perceive that the age of the cell whose molecule they took for the totality of the universe and of which it was only a part, is much more important; then they would discover that the age of the limb of which this cell is only a part is much more important, and the age of the being of which this limb is also only a part, and so forth ad infinitum.
It is up to each person to follow his path exactly as he understands it, insofar as three fundamental rules are of course respected: respect of tastes and decisions of others in the free choice of their partners, constant awareness that others do not belong to us and that no one can be the property of anybody else, and the concern for always seeking above all the happiness of those whom we claim to love.
We see clearly here that the rules which govern the Order of Angels are contrary to the instructions of the messages. For in this order, fulfillment of the prophet takes precedence over that of the Angels. The latter voluntarily lose their freedom to choose a partner. Their first priority must be to watch over the fulfillment of the prophet, to the detriment of their own fulfillment.
The knowledge of messages from the gods of the past and present helps us to deepen our philosophical foundations, namely, to pinpoint the truth and situate ourselves in the Infinite of time and space. It is the validity of the messages that positions us in the truth in relation to our creators. The messages only confirm what we have always felt inside ourselves. They lead us to a greater understanding of our universe. Our level of spirituality comes from what remains of the understanding of the messages. The more we understand the philosophical meaning of the messages, the more we approach the Infinite, the gods of our neighbor.
In sum, the demonstration of a truth that results from an implacable logic.
Knowing the character of Rael as a prophet, the latter understood neither the principles governing our universe nor the order of nature that assures our survival. On the contrary, he did everything to turn us, the MADÉ, away from the Raelienne community.
While the gods ask us to gather together human beings who recognize them as creators, Rael quite simply wanted to separate us from each other by prohibiting raeliens, under the pretext of not wasting their time, from learning the position of the MADÉ on the internet; quite simply, seeing Rael reject members of his own church, demonstrates that it is not he, Rael, who invented the messages.
On the contrary, those who understood the messages work to unite human beings with each other while those who did not understand them work to divide them. The latter are far from uniting them in harmony, for they have not grasped in the messages the importance of each person’s capacity to bring the good into existence so that life exists in the universe!
The more our spirituality evolves with regard to an ever-greater understanding of the messages, the more we will act on such teaching. Thus we will be able to make messages exist within ourselves and influence the greatest number. The messages help us to access the right understanding of the universe. Such a hologram of knowledge concerning the established order and the principles that govern the universe, encoded in the tiniest of our cells, is found in the greatest structures of the cosmos.
