Source text - French VOIR AVEC LA PEAU… Pratiquer un geste chirurgical sur un malade sans utiliser la vue ni le toucher, une idée farfelue, un défi inaccessible ou une prouesse technologique incroyable ? Au laboratoire TIMC (Techniques de l’Imagerie, de la modélisation et de la Cognition) du CHU de Grenoble, le pari est en passe d’être relevé grâce à la ténacité de scientifiques qui travaillent avec acharnement à la mise au point d’un dispositif buccal capable de guider le chirurgien dans ses gestes. Le dispositif appelé TDU (Tongue Display Unit) est simple et ingénieux. Des repères sont fixés sur l’instrument du chirurgien qui, grâce à un système de positionnement en trois dimensions utilisant le principe de triangulation, permet de suivre la progression de l’outil. Une fois le point d’entrée et le point cible déterminés, chaque mouvement est enregistré et une corrélation est faite en temps réel avec une trajectoire pré-établie. Dès que le praticien s’en écarte, une image tactile s’inscrit sur sa langue et lui indique par une flèche, à droite ou à gauche, en avant ou en arrière, la bonne direction. Des informations qui lui apportent une précision au millimètre près! Mais si cet instrument est un incroyable outil pour le chirurgien qui peut alors se concentrer sur son geste, le médecin n’en devient pas pour autant téléguidé et demeure parfaitement maître de son action. Car c’est lui qui chaque fois qu’il le juge utile décide de faire appel au TDU et aux informations que cet appareillage peut lui apporter, tout simplement en appliquant sa langue contre son palais. Ces travaux sur le TDU font suite aux recherches ayant abouti à l’élaboration du TVSS (Tactile Vision Substitution System), un dispositif de suppléance visuo-tactile destiné aux non voyants. Le premier système a été inventé dans les années 1970 par le professeur Paul Bach-y-Rita, neurobiologiste à l’université du Wisconsin qui eut l’idée de compenser la fonction déficiente de la vision en substituant le toucher à ce sens absent. Le TVSS est basé sur une image tactile et son principe est de retranscrire une scène saisie par une caméra à l'aide d'une matrice constituée d’un réseau de petites électrodes qui produisent chacune une excitation micro-électrique. Entre la caméra et la matrice, un micro-ordinateur traduit l’information en impulsions tactiles qui s’inscrivent sur la peau du non-voyant par l’intermédiaire de la plaque réceptrice. En raison de la grande sensibilité de la langue qui est la partie du corps où il y a le plus grand nombre de terminaisons nerveuses au centimètre carré, le système du TVSS a évolué vers une version buccale avec une matrice miniaturisée plus discrète. En relation avec le Professeur Bach-y-Rita, les chercheurs de l’équipe GMCAO (gestes médico-chirurgicaux assistés par ordinateur) du laboratoire TIMC, qui en la matière ont de nombreux brevets à leur actif, ont imaginé d’élaborer un appareillage utilisant le TDU afin d’aider le chirurgien dans son travail quotidien. Le dispositif est actuellement en phase de test au CHU de Grenoble sur des mannequins appelés «fantôme». Son utilisation est très simple. Un entraînement d’une heure environ permet au chirurgien de se familiariser avec l’appareillage et de maîtriser les différents codes d’informations directionnelles qui lui seront transmises lors de l’acte chirurgical. Des améliorations, notamment au niveau ergonomique, sont à apporter. Le TDU est un long ruban équipé de capteurs que le praticien doit encore maintenir en bouche. Un projet de protège-dents avec empreinte du palais pour glisser la matrice est à l’étude et devrait être équipé d’une technologie sans fils. Au-delà de l’aspect médical, le TDU, en transmettant une information sensitive, explore un nouveau canal de communication dont les applications restent encore aujourd’hui à découvrir.	Translation - English Surgery without using sight or touch? A wacky idea, a bet against impossible odds or an astounding technical feat? At the TIMC laboratory (techniques of imaging, modelling and cognition) at Grenoble University Hospital in France, scientists have taken up the challenge with relentless tenacity in order to develop an oral device to guide surgeons in the operating theatre. The TDU (Tongue Display Unit) is simple and ingenious. Markers are fixed on a surgical instrument, and a three-dimensional positioning system applying the principle of triangulation enables the surgeon to follow its progress. Once the entry point and the target point are mapped, each gesture is recorded and a correlation is made in real-time with a predetermined trajectory. If the surgeon strays only slightly, a tactile image registers on his tongue and an arrow indicates the proper direction, right or left, forward or backward. This data provides him with precision measurable in millimetres. The device may represent a remarkable tool for the surgeon, allowing him greater freedom to concentrate on his gestures, but it does not mean he is radio-controlled or deprived of his autonomy. Simply by pressing his tongue on his palate, he retains the power to decide if he wishes to use the TDU and the data it provides. TDU research is the logical extension of investigations resulting in the development of the TVSS (Tactile Vision Substitution System) intended for blind people. The first system was invented in the 1970’s by Professor Bach-y-Rita, a neurobiologist at the University of Wisconsin who came up with the idea of substituting touch for deficient sight. TVSS is based upon a tactile image and its principle is to retranscribe a scene filmed by a camera by means of a matrix composed of a grid of tiny electrodes, each of which emits a micro-electric stimulus. Between camera and matrix, a digital computer translates the data into tactile impulses that register on the blind person’s skin via a receptor. The tongue is a highly sensitive part of the body, containing the greatest number of nerve endings per square centimetre. Consequently TVSS was condensed into a mouth unit with a less conspicuous miniaturised matrix. In conjunction with Professor Bach-y-Rita, the researchers of the GMCAO team (digital imaging for medico-surgical gestures) at the TIMC laboratory, who have obtained a number of related patents, devised equipment integrating the TDU to aid surgeons in their daily work. A prototype is being tested at Grenoble University Hospital on dummies called “phantoms”. The device is easy to use. Little more than an hour’s training is needed to familiarise the surgeon with the unit and various codes for directional data relayed during surgery. Improvements, notably ergonomic, will be necessary. The TDU is a long ribbon equipped with captors that must be held in the mouth. A project is under study for a mouthpiece with an impression of the palate into which the matrix can be slipped, and includes wireless technology. In addition to medicine, the TDU, with its capacity to transmit sensory data, opens up a whole new area of communications whose applications are yet to be discovered.

Source text - French EXPERTISE K.S.Malevitch. Orthodoxe. 2-ème moitié de 1910 (sujet 1912). Toile, huile, 79,8x63,3 cm. Collection privée Description La description, l’analyse et l’attribution de la toile issue d’une collection privée concerne une peinture cubo-futuriste, qui représente le portrait jusqu’à mi-poitrine d’un paysan, avec comme fond, un paysage campagnard (huile sur toile, 79,8x63,3 cm). Dans le coin, en bas à droite, une signature apparaît « Malevitch» réalisée de couleur noire sur un fond humide grisâtre. Elle est proche de la signature de K.Malevitch sur les œuvres « Le portrait amélioré de I.V.Klun » et «L'officier de la garde » (1913-1914) (1). Le châssis est ancien, simple, sur la partie droite du châssis, on remarque une étiquette avec une écriture encadrée « RSFSR/Commissariat populaire / de l’Instruction/ INSTITUT/ des Beaux-Arts/ « __ »____ 192_ », ce qui atteste que l’œuvre a été gardée dans l’Institut des Beaux-Arts de Moscou ou de Leningrad. La toile est de grain moyen, de tissage droit, pas très serré, de fond préparé par l’artiste, blanc. Les rebords sont très étroits, partiellement déchirés, sans fond, les clous sont anciens, avec de grandes têtes, on n’observe pas de trous laissés par des clous (il s'agit probablement d'une première tension de toile). Les guirlandes de tension sont bien reconnaissables. L’envers de la toile est foncé par le temps, plus clair sous le châssis. On remarque des endommagements d’origine externe, de part en part et laissant passer la transparence. La peinture est sale, mais son état est assez bon, malgré deux couches de peinture endommagées en bas, l’une d’elle ayant un trou au travers (2x2cm). Les résultats de l’expertise des matériels et de la technologie, réalisée dans le laboratoire des docteurs Elisabeth et Gerhard Eggers, ne contredisent pas l’attribution de cette œuvre à K.Malevitch et sa datation au début des années 1910 (rapport du 30.01.2006). Analyse critique de l’œuvre Thème, motif Le thème de l’œuvre est caractéristique des intérêts de K. Malevitch au début des années 1910, quand il cherche à cerner la représentation du paysan orthodoxe. Le paysage au fond est également typique pour lui – c’est un certain extérieur d’un village. Selon le genre, le type et le style, l’œuvre ressemble au « portrait d’Ivan Vassilivich Klun » (magazine « Ogoniok », N1, 1913), exposée à l’exposition de « l’Union de la jeunesse » (Saint-pétersbourg, 1912-1913), ainsi que la « Tête d’un paysan » (répétition évidente du sujet), qui aurait été exposée lors de l’exposition « Peinture contemporaine » pratiquement au même moment à Moscou (2)/ certains détails de ressemblance sont présents dans les paysages comme les églises, les chaumières (dans l’œuvre, elles rappellent par leurs formes arrondies des chaumières ukrainiennes, ce qui est normal pour un peintre qui est né et a grandi en Ukraine) (2,3). L’existence de différentes versions des mêmes sujets est typique pour Malevitch, parfois on peine à dater la création de telle ou telle œuvre. Il est probable qu’à Moscou une autre version du « Paysan » a été exposée, une version moins détaillée. (2/3). Ainsi, la version la plus proche de la nôtre et de celle publiée à Ogonyok (selon Nakov) a été peinte plus tard. Nous savons (Malevitch lui-même le disait) qu’il y avait une période où il peignait pour la vente plusieurs versions des toiles sur des sujets champêtres, ainsi, nous pouvons constater qu’il existe des répétitions évidentes d'œuvres connues, qui ont été déjà publiées ailleurs. Probablement, la peinture présentée est l’une de ces versions. Malgré le sujet commun, la version proposée propose des différences de composition d’ordre créatif (on en parlera plus bas), mais pour le moment nous nous en tenons aux variations de l’image. En comparaison avec des dessins perdus que l’on connaît bien, le regard de ce paysan, peut-être à cause de l’asymétrie, n’est pas dirigé vers les yeux du spectateur, mais il se dirige plutôt ailleurs, en haut (3). Il est plus perdu, peut-être – plus religieux, ce qui concerne directement la création de l’image d’un paysan orthodoxe. Le dessin de la collection de L.Mokhoy-Nadya (2/2) est nommé « Orthodoxe » (Nakov, F-304), c’est sur ce dessin que le regard est également perdu, comme sur notre œuvre. La forme est également différente – des éclairs rouges inquiétants évoquent probablement une guerre. Les traits de notre paysan ne sont pas très originaux : il ressemble beaucoup au « Faucheur » (1911-1912, Musé d’art. Nijniy Novgorod). Le tableau est conforme à une série d’œuvres graphiques ou de peintures réalisés par le peintre en 1912 et figurant dans le catalogue de Nakov A, au sein du groupe d’œuvres nommé « Orthodoxe I » ou « Orthodoxe II » (2). Par conséquent ce tableau pourrait également porter le nom d’Orthodoxe. La physionomie d’un peintre Klun I.V. (Klunkov), avec qui Malevitch a fait connaissance en 1908 dans l’atelier de Renberge F, ses traits du visage réguliers, ressemblant presque à ceux d’une icône, ses origines paysannes et le métier de charpentier de son père inspiraient sans doute Malevitch. Malevitch voyait dans Klun un type masculin représentatif (2/4-6), proche par ses caractéristiques de l’idée que se faisait le peintre d’un orthodoxe. Cette représentation de Klun se confondait bien sûr avec celle d’un paysan, qui occupait tant l’imaginaire du peintre qu’elle s’est incarnéeà maintes reprises dans ses œuvres à partir de 1911. Klun I. n’a pas seulement servi de modèle pour toute une série de personnages de ce type dans les tableaux de Malevitch, mais il a aussi inspiré le thème du charpentier, si important dans les villages russes, qui figure constamment dans son œuvre, à commencer par le « Portrait perfectionné de Klun I.V.» (1913, GRM). Ainsi, nous pouvons dire que le tableau que nous analysons fait partie d’une série de tableaux connus, mais qui ne sont pas parvenus jusqu’à nous : le tableau « Portrait de Klun I.V. » (exposition « Union de jeunesse » 1912-1913, magazine « Ogonek », 1913, N° 1) et ses variantes : « La tête d’un paysan » (exposition « Art moderne », Moscou, 1912-1913). Les deux variantes et les dessins analogues sont publiés par Nakov A. (F-302, 303, 304 et autres). Malevitch se souvenait maintes fois du choc qu’il a ressenti face à l’art russe de l’icône lors de son séjour à Moscou. C’est justement à ce moment là que le remarquable travail de Kondakov N.P. « L’iconographie de Jésus Christ » a été publié en grand format. La fameuse exposition des icônes russes à l’occasion du tricentenaire de la Maison de Romanov a eu lieu un peu plus tard en 1913. Cette exposition n’a pas uniquement renforcé l’intérêt pour cet art, mais a également élargi les connaissances sur celui-ci. Notre tableau, malgré sa secondarité, est un autre témoignage de la tentative du peintre pour créer une image symbolique profonde d’une Russie paysanne orthodoxe (sur le fond du « Portrait Klun I.V. », et sa variante, connue d’après une photographie et du dessin « Orthodoxe »). Les silhouettes d’églises sont visibles ainsi que les absides en demi-cercle (3), évoquant la Russie orthodoxe. En même temps, l’image du paysan et sa plasticité témoignent que Malevitch se rapproche de la tradition d’une représentation en buste, en premier lieu celle du Christ, et montre des liens directs avec une monographie de Kondakov N.P. Malevitch a bien sûr eu connaissance du livre de Kondakov, et certaines illustrations de cet album rappellent ses œuvres (4). Par son thème et ses motifs, le tableau s’inscrit dans la première série des peintures de paysan de Malevitch K., et constitue simultanément ses premiers pas dans le style cubiste. Composition. La ressemblance de la composition du tableau analysé avec les autres tableaux connus (2), sa « secondarité » témoigne non pas uniquement d’une recherche, d’une élaboration et d’une reproduction des procédés de composition optimaux, mais également de la prise de conscience par l’auteur des traditions de l’icône. Malevitch n’a jamais perdu les liens avec les traditions de cet art, non seulement dans toutes les variantes de l’Orthodoxe que nous connaissons de la première période, mais également dans les variantes plus tardives de « la tête d’un paysan » (5). La position frontale du torse au centre du tableau, la régularité des traits et de l’expression du visage, l’éloignement du fond sont typiques des icônes russes. Outres ces spécificités, les autres caractéristiques sont typiques des œuvres de Malevitch : l’asymétrie et la différence du niveau des épaules, des sourcils, des yeux (3) ; les lignes à trois biseaux et à trois couleurs du nez ; la forme rigide et asymétrique de la barbe avec une pointe blanche caractéristique à gauche ; les ombres à trois couleurs « métalliques ». C’est la façon particulière dont peint Malevitch, en partie en lien avec les canons de l’icône (4), et en même temps en portant les traces de sa signature, comme certaines rondeurs des structures et leur position élaborée dans le fond. Le clair-obscur est alogique, car la lumière modulant une forme volumineuse qui tombe de différents côtés - à gauche, à droite, de face -, comme dans beaucoup d’oeuvres de Malevitch, y compris dans ses œuvres de style primitif. Du primitivisme viennent également un horizon haut sans ciel, la structuration abstraite du fond et la ligne concave de la terre. Le visage de notre « Orthodoxe » est peint dans l’interprétation malevitchinienne caractéristique à toutes les œuvres analogues déjà citées plus haut : un prisme précis du nez avec la moitié droite rouge et la moitié gauche noire; des yeux avec un contour noir au regard sévère et fixe ; une barbe qui couvre la bouche ; les cheveux noirs coupés au carré. Néanmoins, notre variante n’est pas une copie exacte d’un tableau, publié dans le magazine « Ogonek », ce qui est le cas du tableau « La tête d’un paysan ». Dans le cadre de la composition générale, notre « orthodoxe » a un regard différent, plus détaché. La saturation émotionnelle de l’œuvre est différente des variantes publiées. Le contraste entre les lignes droites et les formes tortueuses donne au portrait frontal et statique une certaine intensité et dynamisme. Le monde tourne autour de la tête de l’ « orthodoxe », des faisceaux de feu se dispersent dans le ciel en forme d’éventail; des remparts énormes de terre; des lignes parallèles de l’épaule gauche d’un paysan, en courbes de manière rythmique et brusque, enveloppe la nuque, s’arrondissent autour de la maison et de son toit. Le fond est plus émotionnel par ses couleurs et sa forme, plus dynamique rythmiquement que toutes les autres œuvres analogues que nous connaissons d’après les photos, et rappelle plutôt la plasticité de «La tête d’une jeune fille paysanne ». Les formes rouges-orangées et bleues sur le ciel produisent une sensation angoissante, comme s’il y avait un incendie. Les volumes arrondis et les masses de tuyaux « métalliques » formés par les ombres se trouvent dans une brusque intensité dynamique et font contraste avec la chemise plate formée par l’ombre en alternant le sombre et le clair en damier, ce qui rend le tableau plus plat malgré le modelant du volume. Le choix de la couleur. Le choix de couleur est très contrasté, sobre et construit la plupart du temps sur le jeu et le rapport entre noir et blanc. Le rouge est le plus émotionnel et, pour cette raison, la couleur dominante, concentrée sous la tête et sur le visage, renforce la dramatisation des images. La gamme de tons chauds complète les tons rose clair, orange, couleur chair, jaune et marron sombre. La gamme de tons froids est représentée par les taches d’un bleu brillant et par des formes taillées en pointe de couleur bleu-vert en haut, ainsi que par les tons gris-bleu clairs sur le mur et sur le toit des maisons au second plan. Les tons d’émeraude et verts s’interpellent les uns les autres dans la pénombre de la barbe, ainsi que les formes arrondies de la terre du côté droit et gauche de la tête. Toute la partie basse du tableau, à l’exception de la pénombre bleue sur la barbe, est réalisée par des nuances achromatiques. Nous ne pouvons pas comparer le choix de la couleur de notre tableau avec les autres tableaux analogues que nous ne connaissons qu’à partir des photographies. Cependant, les courbes rouges orangées, les ombres de différentes couleurs, les formes arrondies bleu-blanches sont presque toujours disséminées par leur ton de couleur dans les différents œuvres de Malevitch de 1911 à 1914. Le technique utilisée pour disposer la peinture est très proche de celle de Malevitch : toutes les couleurs sombres sont mises légèrement, les couleurs claires et surtout les blanches sont intumescentes, les surfaces sombres sont mates et les surfaces claires sont brillantes. La partie la plus proéminente du tableau est le biseau frontal blanc du nez, de même que la maison blanche à gauche peinte d’un mouvement large d’un pinceau. Le contour noir est aussi utilisé. Toutes les rayures d’ombre en couleurs sont peintes de manière complexe et en pénombre – la joue claire, la barbe, les passages en couleur des tons. Les courbes rouge-orangée-jaune du ciel au coucher de soleil ou celles de la lumière de l’incendie sont disposées légèrement, leurs reflets sont intenses. Les touches sont variées – la lumière blanche sur l’épaule gauche est modelée par une petite touche ; la lumière jaune-rose est réalisée par une touche grosse, grasse et souple. A droite de la tête, il y a un champ jaune peint également de manière proéminente aux touches partant dans des sens différents. Les côtés du prisme du nez sont modelés par des petites touches verticales. Le toit de la maison basse à gauche est peint également par une touche petite et moyenne. La lumière sur le front peinte de manière intense et modelé par une touche oblique faite probablement par un pinceau de ….Le modelage des yeux est varié : l’oeil gauche est modelé en relief, l’œil droit est plat avec une pupille en relief. La touche est très petite. Dans l’ensemble, le choix de couleur, la technique et le style individuel de peinture sont très lisibles et sont assez caractéristique pour Malevitch. K. Les œuvres analogues. Nous avons déjà parlé des œuvres les plus analogues à notre tableau. Ce sont deux tableaux de 1912 « Portrait d’Ivan Vasilievitch Klunkov » et « la tête d’un paysan » qui ne sont pas parvenus jusqu’à nous, ainsi que le dessin « Orthodoxe ». Le premier travail a été publié dans le magazine « Ogonek », le deuxième est mentionné dans les archives GTG. Le troisième travail, le dessin, a été publié (sans nom) dans le livre de Malevitch K. « Die gegegstandslose Welt » (Mainz et Berlin, 1927, page 15), et qui ensuite fut préservé dans les archives d’un éditeur du livre Mokhoi-Nadia L.. L’existence des œuvres comme « le portait amélioré de I.V.Klun » (1914, Musée d’Etat russe), d’une série de dessins (2) et de deux compositions plus tardives avec le même nom « Tête d’un paysan » (1928-1929, Musée d’Etat russe) (5) témoigne de l’intérêt permanent de K.Malevitch envers le développement du thème « Orthodoxe » et le rôle important des portraits d’un peintre proche de lui, I.V.Klun. Dans cette logique est inscrite l’œuvre analysée, comme un maillon de la chaîne de recherches du peintre. Constatant que la composition de l’œuvre est étroitement liée aux sujets de 1912, elle se distingue cependant des peintures exposées en 1912 par ses notes alarmantes et inquiétantes, et son atmosphère d’orage qui est probablement liée à l’approche de la guerre. Il est également nécessaire de marquer l'unité organique de la composition, sa tension et la force de l'influence sur l'amateur, qui ont été rajoutées par rapport aux versions connues auparavant. L'existence des analogies presque identiques, le thème commun, le style et l'écriture, ainsi que les résultats de l'expertise technologique, permettent d'attribuer la peinture à K.Malevitch, la nommer "Orthodoxe" et la dater de la deuxième moitié des années de 1910. Conclusion Nous avons dû analyser, décrire et attribuer une peinture cubofuturiste (toile, huile, 79,8x63,3cm) issue d'une collection privée, avec la signature "K.Malevitch". L'analyse du style, du thème, de l'image, de la composition, du choix des couleurs et de la technique de la peinture, la comparaison de la toile avec des analogies connues, permettent d'attribuer la toile à K.S.Malevitch, la nommer "Orthodoxe "et la dater préalablement de la première moitié de 1910. Private collection Description The description, analysis and attribution of a canvas belonging to a private collection concern a cubo-futurist painting representing a half-bust portrait of a peasant with a rural landscape in the background (oil on canvas, 79.8 x 63.3cm). The lower right hand corner bears the signature “Malevich” in black on a moist grayish ground. It is very similar to K. Malevich’s signature on the works “Improved Portrait of I.V. Klun” and “Officer of the Guard” (1913-1914) (1). The stretcher is old and simple. On the right, we can observe a label with the framed inscription “RSFSR/Peoples’ Commissary/of Education/INSTITUTE/of Fine Arts” suggesting that the work was kept at the Institute of Fine Arts either in Moscow or Leningrad. The canvas is of medium grain, straight weave, not very tight, with a white primer prepared by the artist. The edges are very narrow, partially torn, with no priming, the nails are old, with large heads, and no observable holes have been left by the nails (it seems to be the first stretching of the canvas). The slots are distinctly recognizable. The back of the canvas is dark with age, and lighter under the stretcher. Damage of external origin can be observed everywhere, resulting in translucency. The painting is soiled, but in quite good condition despite two damaged layers of paint at the bottom, one of them containing a hole (2x2cm). The results of the laboratory evaluation of materials and technique made by Drs. Elisabeth and Gerhard Eggers are not in contradiction with the attribution of this work to K. Malevich nor its dating to the beginning of the 1910s (report of 30.01.2006). Critical analysis of the work Theme, motif The theme of the work is characteristic of K. Malevich’s interests at the beginning of the 1910s when he was trying to define a representation of the Orthodox peasant. The landscape in the background is also typical of his work – representing the outskirts of a particular village. Its genre, type and style recall “Portrait of Ivan Vassilivich Klun” (Ogoniok Magazine, N1, 1913), as well as “Head of a Peasant” (an obvious repetition of the subject), probably shown at the “Contemporary Painting” exhibition in Moscow almost at the same time (2). Some similar details are present in the landscapes, such as the churches and thatched cottages (in this work, their rounded shapes are evocative of Ukrainian cottages, which is natural for a painter born and raised in the Ukraine) (2,3). Different versions of the same subject are usual with Malevich. Sometimes it is difficult to establish a date for a work’s creation. It is likely that another less detailed version of “The Peasant” was shown in Moscow. (2/3). Thus the version closest to ours and the one published in Ogoniok (according to Nakov) was painted later. We know (Malevich said so himself) that there was a period when he painted several versions of a same painting on a rural subject in order to sell them, and so we can conclude that obvious repetitions in known works are extant, and that they have already been published elsewhere. In all likelihood, the painting presented here is one of those versions. Despite the common subject, the version in question shows differences of a creative nature (to be discussed later), but for the time being we will limit ourselves to variations in the image. In comparison with lost drawings that we know well, this peasant’s gaze, perhaps because of its asymmetry, is not directed toward the eyes of the viewer, but elsewhere, higher up (3). He is more absent, perhaps – more religious, which directly concerns the creation of the image of an Orthodox peasant. The drawing in the L.Mokhoy-Nadya collection (2/2) is called “Orthodox” (Nakov, F-304). It is in this drawing that the gaze is also absent, like the work under discussion. The form is also different – disturbing red flashes of light probably evoke the war. The features of this peasant are not very original: he looks much like “The Reaper” (1911-1912, Museum of Art, Nijni Novgorod). The painting is consonant with a series of graphic works or paintings done by the artist in 1912 and cited in the catalogue of A. Nakov, among a group of works entitled “Orthodox I” or “Orthodox II”(2). Consequently, this painting could also be called Orthodox. Malevich was undoubtedly inspired by the physiognomy of I.V. Klun (Klunkov), a painter and the son of a carpenter, whom he met at F. Renberg’s studio in 1908. With his even features, almost like those of an icon, and his peasant origins, in Klun Malevich saw a representative masculine type (2/4-6), whose characteristics likened him to the painter’s idea of an Orthodox Russian. This representation of Klun of course merges with that of the peasant, so present in the painter’s imagination that it was embodied many times in his work from 1911 onwards. Klun served not only as a model for a whole series of subjects of this type in Malevich’s paintings, but he also inspired the theme of the carpenter, so important in Russian villages, that figures constantly in his work, beginning with “Improved Portrait of I.V Klun.” (1913, GRM). We may therefore venture that the painting we are analyzing is part of a series of works that are known but have not survived: the painting “Portrait of I.V. Klun (“Youth Union” exhibition 1912-1913, Ogoniok magazine, 1913, n° 1) and variations: “Head of a Peasant” (“Modern Art” exhibition, Moscow, 1912-1913). The two variations and similar drawings are published by A. Nakov (F-302, 303, 304 and others). Many times Malevich recalled the shock he felt when faced with the Russian art of the icon during his stay in Moscow. It was exactly at that time that the remarkable work of N.P. Kondakov “The Iconography of Jesus Christ” was published in large format. The famous exhibition of Russian icons on the occasion of the tercentenary of the House of Romanov took place a little later in 1913. This exhibition not only reinforced interest in this form of art, but deepened knowledge of it. The painting under scrutiny, despite its secondary status, is another proof of the painter’s attempt to create a profound symbol of rural Russian orthodoxy (based on “Portrait of I.V. Klun” and its variation, known through a photo and the drawing “Orthodox”). The silhouettes of churches are visible as well as their semicircular apses (3), evoking Orthodox Russia. At the same time, the image of the peasant and his plasticity are proof that Malevich was drawing closer to the tradition of representation as a bust, beginning with that of Christ, and also show a direct connection with N.P. Kondakov’s monograph. Of course Malevich knew about Kondakov’s book, and some illustrations in this album are reminiscent of his work (4). By its theme and motifs, the painting comes within the scope of the first series of K. Malevich’s peasant paintings, and simultaneously constitutes his first attempts in the cubist style. Composition The compositional similarity of the painting under analysis to his other known paintings (2) and its “secondary” nature show both the painter’s optimal study, development and reproduction of the processes of composition, and his awakening to the traditions of the icon. Malevich never lost his connection with the traditions of this art, not only in all the variations of “Orthodox” that we know from the first period, but also from later variations of “Head of a Peasant” (5). The frontal position of the torso in the center of the painting, the regularity of the features and the expression of the face, the distancing from the background are typical of Russian icons. Besides these specificities, the other characteristics are consistent with Malevich’s work: the asymmetry and disparity in the height of the shoulders, eyebrows and eyes (3); the nose’s three-beveled lines and three colors; the rigid and asymmetrical shape of the beard with its characteristic white point to the left; “metallic” three-colored shadows. This is the particular way Malevich paints, partly in relation to the canons of the icon (4), and at the same time bearing traces of his signature, like a certain roundness of structures and their elaborate positioning in the background. The claire-obscure is without logic since light modulating a voluminal form comes from different sides –left, right, frontally-, as in many of Malevich’s works, including his primitives. The high horizon without a sky, the abstract structuring of the background and the concave line of the earth also derive from primitivism. The face of this “Orthodox” is painted with the Malevichian interpretation that is characteristic of all the similar works already cited: a precise prism of the nose with the right half red and the left half black; severe, fixed eyes lined in black; a beard that covers the mouth; square-cut black hair. Nevertheless our variation is not an exact copy of a painting published in Ogoniok magazine as is the case of the painting “Head of a Peasant”. In the context of the general composition, our “Orthodox” has a different, more detached, gaze. The emotional saturation of the work differs from its published variations. The contrast between the straight lines and tortuous forms gives the frontal, static portrait a certain intensity and a certain dynamism. The world moves around the head of the “Orthodox”, beams of fire scatter fanlike in the sky; enormous earth ramparts; lines parallel to the left shoulder of a peasant, curved in a rhythmical and abrupt manner, envelop the nape of the neck, growing rounder about the house and its roof. The background is more emotional in its colors and in its form, more rhythmically dynamic than all other similar works that we know through photos, recalling more the plasticity of “Head of a Young Peasant Girl”. The reddish orange and blue shapes in the sky produce a harrowing feeling, as if there were a fire. The rounded shapes and mass of “metallic” tubes formed by the shadows appear in abrupt dynamic intensity contrasting with the flat shirt formed by the shadow alternating dark and light in a checkerboard, that make the painting flatter despite the sculpting of the volume. The Choice of Color The choice of color is greatly contrasted, sober and mostly constructed by playing on black and white. Red is the most emotional, and for this reason, the dominant color, concentrated under the head and on the face, reinforcing the dramatization of the images. The palette of warm tones completes the light pinks, oranges, skin tones, yellows and dark browns. The palette of cool colors is represented by patches of bright blue and pointed blue-green shapes at the top, as well as light gray-blue tones on the wall and the roofs of houses in the middle distance. Emerald and green tones contrast with each other in the shadowy light of the beard, as well as in the rounded shapes in the earth to the right and the left of the head. All the lower part of the painting, except for the blue shadowy light on the beard, is achieved through achromatic nuances. We cannot compare the choice of color in our painting with other similar paintings we know from photographs. However, the red orangey curves, the shadows of different colors, the rounded blue-white shapes are almost always scattered according to color tone in Malevich’s paintings from 1911 to 1914. The technique used to apply paint is consistent with Malevich’s: all dark colors are applied lightly, the light colors and especially the whites are intumescent, the dark surfaces are matt and the light surfaces glossy. The most prominent part of the painting is the white frontal bevel of the nose, like the white house to the left painted with a large brushstroke. Black lining is also used. All the colored strips of shadow are painted in a complex manner and in shadowy light – the light cheek, the beard, the transitions of tone into color. The red-orangey-yellow curves of the sky at sunset or those of the fire’s light are applied lightly and their reflections are intense. The strokes are varied – the white light on the left shoulder is formed by a delicate stroke; the yellow-rose light is achieved with a thick, wide, soft stroke. To the right of the head, there is a yellow field also painted in a prominent manner with strokes going in different directions. The sides of the prism of the nose are formed with small vertical strokes. The roof of the low house to the left is also painted with small and medium strokes. The light on the forehead is painted with intensity, with an oblique stroke, probably with a brush. The shaping of the eyes is varied: the left eye is shaped in relief, the right eye is flat with a pupil in relief. The stroke is tiny. Overall, the choice of color, the technique and the individual style of painting are very distinguishable and quite characteristic of K. Malevich. Similar works We have already spoken of the works closest to our painting. They are the two paintings of 1912, “Portrait of Ivan Vasilievitch Klunkov” and “Head of a Peasant”, which have not survived, as well as the drawing “Orthodox”. The first work was published in Ogoniok magazine, the second is mentioned in the GTG archives. The third work, a drawing, was published (nameless) in K. Malevich’s book “Die Gegegstandslose Welt” (Mainz and Berlin, 1927, pg 15), and later preserved in the archives of L. Mokhoi-Nadia, the book’s publisher. The existence of works such as “Improved Portrait of I.V. Klun” (1914, Russian State Museum), a series of drawings (2) and two later compositions with the same name “Head of a Peasant” (1928-1929, Russian State Museum) (5) are proof of K. Malevich’s permanent interest in the development of the theme “Orthodox” and the important role of the portraits of I.V. Klun, a painter close to him. The work under study fits into this logic, like a link in a chain of research on the painter. Noting that its composition is closely related to the subjects of 1912, it differs nonetheless from those paintings exhibited in 1912 due to its alarming and disturbing elements, and the stormy atmosphere that is probably attributable to the onset of the war. The organic unity of the composition must also be stressed, its tension and its force, which have been added in relation to earlier known versions. The existence of almost identical variants, the common theme, the language and the style as well as the technical report, allow us to attribute the painting to K. Malevich, call it “Orthodox” and date it to the second half of 1910. Conclusion We had the task of analyzing, describing and attributing a cubo-futurist painting (canvas, oil, 79.8x63.3cm) from a private collection, bearing the signature “K. Malevich”. The analysis of the style, the theme, the image, the composition, the choice of colors and the painting technique, the comparison of the canvas with similar ones, allow us to attribute the painting to K.S. Malevich, call it “Orthodox” and date it preliminarily to the first half of 1910. ??? The painting may be considered an important piece for museums and collections. N°1 Orthodox. Motif 1912.
