Source text - English The Philippines is the third largest fish producing nation in Asia, but the small-scale fishing sector experiences high levels of poverty. The country produces 2.79million tonnes of fish annually. Fishing is the most important economic activity alongside agriculture.
The Philippine government’s privatisation programmes gives preference to private individuals and foreign-based corporations, who use advanced technologies to monopolise the industry. They have effectively displaced many small-scale fishers, whose daily catch has dwindled to a mere 3-5kg’s per day as opposed to the daily 15-20kgs they managed in the 1970s.
